Dear Parent/Carer,

During Fairtrade Fortnight, all our classes embraced the concept of Fairtrade, including:

Researching Fair Trade, Fairtrade class activities, Fairtrade Football Tournaments, Fairtrade Breakfast, Fairtrade Tombola and raffle, Fairtrade chocolate foundation. Many thanks for your support with the fund raising. We have managed to raise over £350.

On the evening of Tuesday 8th March a group of P4 and P5 children represented our school at a Dance Festival at Govan High School. Well done to our ‘Dance Troop’ and thanks to the parents/carers who transported them to this event.

An athletics team represented Sandwood at South West Schools Athletics Day at the Emirates Arena on Wednesday 16th March. Congratulations to all children who took part.

Seven children from P6 and P7 will represent the school on Thursday 17th March at Rosshall Academy at the Rosshall Learning Community Netball Tournament.

A Rookie Rockstars Reunion Concert will be held on the afternoon of Friday 1 April for our children and they may dress as a Rockstar for the day.

They should bring a payment of £1 on this day. Many thanks.

I would like to remind everyone that school finishes on Thursday 24 March at 3.00 pm for our Easter. We will re-open on Tuesday 29th March at 9.00am. For the Spring Break holiday, school finishes at 2:30pm on Friday 1st April. The school will re-open on Monday 18th April at 9:00am

Health Spot

Auld Firm Alliance -

Primary 4 children will have a Tour of Ibrox

Stadium on Friday 18th March as a finale of the work they have been doing with the Auld Firm Alliance.

After school clubs

Next term there will be after school Club Golf for P5 children. More information will follow.

Head Lice

Head lice are a common problem, however schools now do not use ‘alert’ letters.

It is parents’ responsibility to check their child’s hair regularly. We have devised an information leaflet for parents which can be located from the school office.

Schools’ Autism awareness week

This week we have been raising awareness of Autism through lessons, activities and assemblies. We will continue to develop awareness by educating our children about the behaviours and characteristics of autism and what we can do to help.

Rights Respecting schoolS

We are still continuing with our work on Rights Respecting Schools. This month we are focusing on the following Children’s Rights through our work on Health & Wellbeing:-

Article 42: Governments must make the convention known to children and adults.

Article 23:Children who have any kind of disability have the right to special care and support, so they can live full and independent lives.

If you want to find out more about the UNCRC –United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child visit. www.unicef.org

Health and Safety

In the interest of Health and Safety access to the school should be via our pedestrian gates on Sandwood Road and Hillington Road South. Unaccompanied pupils must not enter or leave via traffic gates at any point during the day.

We welcome our parents into our school however please note that in the interests of safety for our pupils we cannot have unaccompanied or authorised adults around the school. Please report to the office and we will be happy to assist you.

As always we welcome your support in keeping our pupils safe.

Please note that no dogs are allowed in the school grounds for health and safety reasons. For your information, Glasgow City Council’s policy is that there is no smoking anywhere within school grounds.

We thank you for your support in being vigilant about the on-going issues with vandalism and anti-social behaviour in the local area.

Easter Assembly

Our Easter Assembly for the children will be held on

Thursday 24th March at 1:30 pm at St Andrew’s Church. The Service will be led by our SchoolChaplain the Rev Lyn Peden. All parents/carers are invited to attend.

School Uniform

I request that children wear full school uniform every day. Wearing school uniform:

·  shows signs of equality.

·  makes pupils less self-conscious about their appearance.

·  saves money.

·  makes non- uniform days more exciting.

·  encourages children to have pride in themselves and our school.

Reading Assessment

As part of Scotland’s Attainment Challenge, Glasgow City Council Schools will be completing an online standardised reading test for P4 and P7 pupils. This will replace our standardised test this session. Results will be used along with other assessments to plan further next steps for learning for pupils.

Attendance

The expectation of Glasgow City Council is that pupils’ attendance should not fall below 95%. Letters from the school will be issued when a child’s attendance falls below a certain level highlighting their child’s percentage of attendance at school. On occasion it may be necessary for an Education Liaison Officer to visit a family home to offer support to families with regard to attendance.

Please ensure you telephone the absence line (0141 287 0039) if your child is going to be absent. Also, we would be much obliged if you could contact the school if/when you receive a text message regarding absence. Thank you.
