Playing soccer at Southern Middle School is a privilege that carries with it specific responsibilities and expectations. Since you are a part of a team that represents the SMS community as a whole, your actions on and off the soccer fieldaffect all members affiliated with the soccer program. The Southern Middle School Athletic Department requires that the following expectations must be understood and adhered to by all team members on and off the playing field.

  1. Any athlete is a student first. Therefore, all rules of Southern Middle School apply. This includes maintaining grades, following P.B.I.S and all of its components, attendance, and discipline. You must realize as an athlete, you not only represent yourself, but also your parents, the coaching staff, the team, and the rest of the Southern community.

*Students must have passed 5 subjects (All 4 core and 1 elective) during the previous semester in order to be eligible to compete.

TRYOUT PROCEDURES

Tryouts will be held on February 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th from 3:30 until 5:00pm. They will take place afterschool on the soccer field located behind the school. When 2nd Load is called, proceed to the Gym, change in the locker room, and report directly to the outdoor eating area for form verification and to receive a number. Take everything with yousince you will be leaving from the field.

*Southern Middle School does NOT allow parents to watch try-outs or practices.

*Please arrive promptly at 5:00 to pick up your child each day from try-outs.

You must have the following forms on file in order to participate in tryouts.NO EXCEPTIONS. These forms are the following:

  1. Completed Physical on file with the Athletic Department
  2. Completed Team Rules Form
  3. Concussion Awareness Form
  4. Emergency Contact

Cuts will be made following try-outs on Friday, February 12th.

IN SEASON PRACTICE AND GAME PROCEDURES

1. All practices are mandatory. If a practice is going to be missed, you must

contact Coach Colgrove prior to your absence. Any special arrangements should be taken care of at least one day in advance and will only be allowed in extreme circumstances.Missed practice for any reason (including pre-scheduled absences or illnesses) will be made up on the field on the return date. Athletes are responsible for making up the conditioning that they missed during practice.

  1. We will practice Monday through Friday from 3:30 pm – 5:15 pm. Your rides must be at school by 5:30pm. Please understand that the coaching staff cannot leave until all players and managers have been picked up. Carpooling is encouraged (as long as permission is given by the parent) If you are absent from school you are NOT allowed to practice and/or play that day.
  1. We will not be returning to SMS after away games. All players will be picked up from the away venue. In the event that a player will be leaving with someone other than a parent, arrangements MUST be made in advance with Coach Colgrove. In addition, players must let me know (in person and with their rides) that they are leaving the premises.
  1. Grade level does NOT guarantee playing time or position seniority at any time during the season.
  1. Parents are not to be at practice until it is time to pick up the players. Parents are asked to stay in their cars until practice is over.
  1. If a player has a problem, she is to come to the coach first, if there continues to be a problem then the parents may set up a meeting with the coach. Parents must call the school and set up a meeting before they will be allowed to talk with the coach about a problem. Parents are not to approach the coach on the field during practice or games.
  1. Cell phones are not allowed at practice or games.
  1. You are making a commitment to the team which carries with it the responsibility

to give 100%, whether in effort, attitude, or in practices/games. This also includes the cooperation and support of teammates and coaches.

  1. Practice attire should consist of soccer cleats, shin guards, and suitable practice wear. T-shirts, shorts, sweatpants, and/or sweatshirts.No tank-tops. Dress for the weather. We will practice outside as much as possible; it is your responsibility to see that you have appropriate clothing for the weather. No jewelry is to be worn at practice or at games.
  1. Managers are expected to attend all games and practices, just like the players.
  1. Southern soccer commitments take priority over any additional travel teams or extracurricular activities.

12. The following guidelines will be used for disciplinary reasons with the players

MISSED PRACTICE – Without prior arrangements with Coach Colgrove

1st offense 12 additional laps – no start for next game

2nd offense 12 additional laps – benched for 1 game

3rd offense removal from team

***Missed practice for any reason (including pre-scheduled absences) will be made up on the field. Athletes are responsible for making up the conditioning that they missed for any reason. Be prepared for make-up on the day you return to practice.

P.B.I.S infraction log will be reviewed on a regular basis

CUBS-

1st offense- additional exercises with 10 laps

2nd offense- more additional exercises with 20 laps

3rd offense- sent home from practice

4th offense- treated as an ISS (1 game suspension)

ISS-

1st offense- 1 game suspension

2nd offense- dismissal from team

OSS –

Automatic dismissal from the team.

Practice/Game Misconduct –

Coach’s discretion after a meeting with the player. Coaches reserve the right to bench a player based on poor attitude and/or sportsmanship.
