SENTENTIAL LOGIC

TRANSLATING SENTENCES

1.  Identify and circle each sentence connective (and, or, if/then, not).

2.  Identify the main connective of each sentence (biggest pieces).

3.  Circle each atomic sentence in every sentence.

4.  Create a dictionary with a capital letter corresponding to each atomic sentence.

5.  Writing each sentence connective in its location, with blank spaces for other text (and -- &, or – V, if/then à, not -- ~).

6.  Determine where to put each capital letter corresponding to the different atomic sentences (for a conditional it’s important to have the condition or antecedent before the arrow and the result or consequent after the arrow).

7.  Write the letters in the appropriate spots.

8.  If there is more than one sentence connective, add parentheses so that the main connective of the formula corresponds to the main connective of the English version of the sentence.
