Business Honors Program Fall 2017 Business English Final Exam Presentation Scenario

A British company named Reliable Home Plastics(RHP) manufactures many sorts of small plastic implements that are useful around the typical home in England. These products include plastic spoons, bowls, leftover containers, wall hooks, safety covers for electrical outlets, colorful window decorations, knickknack containers, and many other handy little plastic things.RHP frequently adds new products and often changes its designs to keep up with the latest fads.

The company is planning to open a production facility in China and is considering nine different cities as the location for the new factory. Three top executives of RHP have come to China to gather information and decide where the new factory should be established.

Each team (pair or triple) of students will play the role of a consulting team hired to represent a city and convince RHP to choose that city. Each team needs to give a PowerPoint presentation to show off the good, positive features of their city. Discuss why this location is the best choice.Emphasize any special characteristics of the city that make it the most appropriate location for this new factory.

Each person has about 4 minutes for his/her part of your team’s presentation. If your team is a pair, one partner does the first 4 minutes and the other the last 4, finishing the pitch in about 8 minutes. If your team is a triple, your presentation will take about 12 minutes split up as 4+4+4. It is known that RHP executives are very picky about promptness and timing, so your team’s total time should be within 1 minute of the projected time (i.e. 7-9 minutes for a pair, 11-13 minutes for a triple).

The nine cities trying to attract RHP are the following, listed in Pinyin alphabetical order. They will be giving their presentations in this order too.

  1. Changchun
  2. Chengdu
  3. Chongqing
  4. Harbin
  5. Hefei
  6. Nanjing
  7. Qingdao
  8. Suzhou
  9. Wuhan

Which student team represents which city will be chosen randomly.

Preparation:

Students will choose their own teams of 2 or 3. In Murray’s Lesson 6 on November 27, we will have a random draw to see which team gets which city. Teams can start preparing now, even without knowing which city they will represent, by blocking out their strategy. Each team member is expected to participate fully in the planning of the presentation – no deadbeats! Note that by helping your partner(s) sound better, your team’s presentation will give a better impression, and so your own grade will be better.
