TEXT

Rejda, Principles of Risk Management and Insurance, Seventh Edition.

GOALS

The goals of this course will be: (1) to cover basic ideas, problems, and principles found in all types of modern insurance and other methods of handling risk; (2) to emphasize the fundamental unifying elements of risk and insurance; and (3) to stimulate thought about the problems of risk and insurance.

GENERAL

The subject matter for this class will be divided into three major subject areas. The first area will include the nature of risks and risk bearing, the insurance institution, fundamentals of insurance contracts, and government regulation. The second area will be primarily concerned with the major property and liability insurance contracts available for public consumption. The third area will examine the fields of life, health, and social insurance. The major mode of instruction will be a lecture/discussion format, augmented by guest speakers from the community as appropriate.

EVALUATION

Students will be evaluated on three separate criteria. First, there will be three exams that coincide with the three main subject areas outlined above. Second, there will be a succinct position paper submitted concerning a vital issue raised during the course of our study of each main subject area (total of three due.) Third, there will be required a complete risk manager program for your "family" as a semester project (handout with instructions to follow).

Exams are worth 100 points each. Position papers will be worth 33 points each. Semester project worth 100 points. Final grades will be determined by the distribution of total points attained by the students in the class.
