Dual Enrollment

Dual enrollment affords a student the opportunity to enroll in a post-secondary institution while attending high school for the purpose of earning credits for a high school diploma and/or a post secondary degree. A student must meet the requirements of Policy 801.03 ADMISSION: DUAL ENROLLMENT/DUAL CREDIT for HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT with the following restrictions to be eligible to participate in the dual enrollment program:

  1. A student must have written permission of the principal and superintendent or his/her designee.
  1. In order for a student to take a core course, he/she must be in grade 11 or 12 and have completed all required core courses for previous grades and all parts of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. In order for a student to take an elective course, he/she must have completed all required core courses for all previous grades.
  1. A student must have a “B” average as defined by LEA policy in completed high school core courses.
  1. A student who participates in the dual enrollment program must pay regular tuition as required by the post-secondary institution.
  1. Courses taken by dual enrollment shall be at the post-secondary/college level. Students will not be allowed to take remedial or developmental post-secondary level courses, P.E. courses, audit courses or courses below 100. Any type of college course taught by teleconference, Internet, distant learning, cassette, correspondence or any course offered by an alternative method of delivery must require that all examinations be taken on the college campus offering the course and must be given under the instructor’s supervision.
  1. Dual enrollment courses will be weighted as defined by the VAL/SAL Policy or the Class Weighting Policy after school year 2013-2014.
  1. Students will be allowed to earn a maximum of two (2) high school credits per school year through dual enrollment credit.
  1. If a school offers Advanced Placement course of the similar type and grade level a student may not receive high school credit for a similar Dual Enrollment course.
  1. Ten quarter/six semester credit hours at the post-secondary level shall equal one credit at the high school level in the same or related subject. Half-credits may be earned for courses of five (5) quarter hours or three (3) semester hours.
  1. A student must have written parental permission to drive and must provide his/her own transportation for courses offered off the high school campus during the normal school day. A student must follow all policies and procedures for driving a vehicle on campus.
  1. Students taking post-secondary level courses must abide by and are subject to the Lawrence County Schools Code of Student Conduct and attendance requirements while attending college courses and/or while on the campus for related activities.
  1. Students may leave the high school campus to take a post-secondary level course and then return to the high school campus on the same day for classes.
  1. Students will be allowed to leave the high school campus to take a post secondary level course and return to the high school campus for school related activities (athletics, band and other extra-curricular activities) on the same day.
  1. Students will be allowed to take post-secondary level courses only from institutions having a written agreement with Lawrence County Schools.
  1. Exception may be made for students enrolled in a “High Tech” High School with principal and superintendent’s approval.

The guidelines for dual enrollment/dual credit will be reviewed on an annual basis.
