Grade 5 - Collaborative Conversations – Ming, Mingle Video Transcript

00:00 [MRS. VALBUENA]

Last Friday it was suggested that we write our own Constitution and Bill of Rights. So we had great time writing our own Preamble didn’t we?

So we're going to take that out a little bit later and try to finish our own Bill of Rights. But before we do that, I think it's important that we continue thinking and learning about government so that we can do a very good job when we write our own Bill of Rights.

So, if you would please put your essays on the top of those computers and clear your desk. Let's continue sharing our ideas about government. So we are going to use our “Mingle, Mingle” strategy. If you would please stand up and push your chair in.

And I'll review…we do this all the time, but I'll review with you what to do - when you hear me clapping and singing “Mingle, mingle”, please walk around and mingle with your mouth closed. You may sing if you want and clap if you want. As soon as my clapping stops, you're going to go face-to-face with whoever's nearby. That's your talking partner. Okay? When I give you a question and I'm specifically asking you questions about government and your role and responsibility in government.

01:15 [MRS.VALBUENA]

Alright Scholars, are you ready for your first mingle? Here we go

Mingle, mingle, mingle

Mingle, mingle, mingle.

Mingle, mingle, mingle

Mingle, mingle, mingle

Mingle, mingle, Stop.

Face-to-face with whoever's nearest you. Pick a partner. And Scholars you should be face-to-face with someone. Your discussion question is: Okay, we have a lost and found, come here, good, you found each other hurry…

01:41 [MRS. VALBUENA]

Our first discussion question about rules and laws: Are you ready? The question is: How would you feel if there were no rules or laws at home or at school?

01:58 [STUDENT #1]

I would feel a little scared and a little happy because, if there were no rules, I’d be “Yea!”. But at the same time, if somebody were to break into my house, I wouldn’t be happy.

[SARAH]

I would want rules because my brother, would do whatever he wanted. And he would just like, run wild across the house. And then, if there is no rules at school. I would kind of be happy because the aides are always like “You’re in trouble.” and sitting us down. And we’re not allowed to jump off the swings or anything and all that.

[STUDENT #1]

And if we could sit outside every day.

[SARAH]

Yeah.

02:37 [MRS. VALBUENA]

Okay Scholars, the second part of that question is: How would you feel if there were no rules and laws in your community or in the world. Talk about that.

02:49 [STUDENT #1]

If there were no rules in the world, it would be kind of scary because if we didn’t have any rules in the world, people would have not have made up the whole red light, yellow light, green light. So then if you had two cars, they would probably run into each other because there nothing there to tell you that..

[SARAH]

They still do it anyways.

But I would still want rules.

Yeah. And if there was no like rules in the world, that would be kind of scary, because when the criminals break into your house, they get arrested. And if there wasn’t any rules, they wouldn’t get arrested. They would just keep doing it, and doing it, and doing it. They would just, yeah.

03:32 [MRS. VALBUENA]

The one in my family, for the school, for teachers, the principals, and sometimes the students, the one in my family, is my Dad and my Mom. My Dad’s the one that cooks, my Momis the one that does the chores.

[MRS. VALBUENA]
