2009 Black History Theme:
The Quest for Black Citizenship in the Americas
Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Black History Month
Carter Godwin Woodson was born on December 19, 1875, in New Canton, Va. He was an American historian who first opened the long-neglected field of black studies to scholars. He also popularized field of study schools and colleges attended by African Americans. To focus attention on African and African American contributions to civilization, he founded Negro History Week in 1926. This celebration and remembrance would later evolve into Black History Month.
Today, February is acknowledged as the month to launch the Black History Theme annually. Many people ask why Black History Month is launched in February. Dr. Woodson chose February because even though the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery, was signed in January, slaves did not begin to hear of the news until February.
African Americans have played central roles in some of the most triumphant and courageous moments in our Nation's history. During National African American History Month, we honor the rich heritage of African Americans and pay tribute to their many contributions to our Nation.
In 1915, Dr. Carter Woodson recognized the need for our country to gain a more complete and informed understanding of our past. The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, today, (ASALH) established the first Negro History Week to emphasize that, "We have a wonderful history behind us . . . " Through the pioneering efforts of Dr. Woodson and the hard work of the Association, this observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.
