Challenging Behavior Referral 1302.17
Policy
Children with challenging behaviors may need more assertive behavioral strategies to help them learn appropriate behavior. Strategies will be developed by classroom staff, parent, Mental Health Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and Mental Health Professional.
Procedure
1. If a child continues to display out of control behavior, call the Mental Health Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator.
a. After discussion of intervention applied, and the safety of the child, peers, or staff is at risk, the child may be sent home for the remainder of that day to help the child gain control
b. Record this behavior on the Observation Form (KHS-403)
c. State facts of behavior, date and initial information
d. No videos and/or pictures are to be taken of children’s challenging behaviors by classroom staff
e. Upon returning to center next day, child should not be subjected to consequences for the previous day’s behavior
2. If you have documented out of control behavior on the Observation Form (KHS-403), three times within one week, discontinue the documentation on Observation Form (KHS-403) and begin documentation on the Behavior Management Observation Form (KHS-404)
a. Call the Mental Health Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator and discuss the child’s behavior.
b. Reference call on Family Contact Record (KHS-800), Document information in Child Plus Mental Health section (Transaction Tab).
3. The Mental Health Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator will make arrangements to observe individual children.
4. Observation results will be discussed and further recommendations will be made, which may consist of but are not limited to:
a. Classroom arrangement/management
b. Parent conference
c. Referral for professional individual child observation
5. If the parent, center staff, and coordinator agree that a referral for an individual child observation by a state licensed Mental Health Professional is in the child’s best interest the following steps will occur:
a. Written parental consent will be obtained on “Permission To Refer”
(KHS-511)
b. Center Director will notify the Mental Health Coordinator
c. The Mental Health Coordinator will notify the Mental Health Professional
d. The Mental Health Professional will contact the Center Director and a date will and time will be scheduled for an individual child observation
e. Parents will be notified and time will be allowed for them to consult with the Mental Health Professional and Reference on Family Contact Record
(KHS-800) and enter detailed information in Child Plus Mental Health Section (Transaction Tab).
6. Results of individual child’s observation will be reviewed and discussed with classroom staff and with parents upon request.
a. Teachers will document implementation of written recommendations on the Weekly Lesson Plan (KHS-602) or Lesson Plan Supplement (KHS-602a). These children will be identified with an * (asterisk) in the Mental Health section. If there is more than one child with individual recommendations use their initials to identify them.
7. Child’s progress will be monitored through continued communication between parents, staff, coordinator and Mental Health Professional
8. The Mental Health Coordinator or the Assistant Coordinator will direct the staff as to the continuation of behavior documentation.
9. If a child continues to display out of control behavior refer to Suspension & Expulsion Policy.
10. Enter all information in Child Plus Mental Health Section (Mental Health Info Tab).
Parents of dual language learners will have a translated note/letter or an interpreted call, staff conference, or home visit whenever possible.
