II. Course Description
The course prepares students for advanced anesthesia skills needed in the anesthetic management of patients undergoing a variety of complex surgical and/or diagnostic procedures. This course is the final practicum course in the anesthesia program and prepares students for clinical practice. The didactic portion of the course focuses on professional aspects of nurse anesthesia to include the business of anesthesia and practice management, reimbursement methodologies and payment policies, entrepreneurship, legal and ethical issues, quality improvement and risk management, professional advocacy, and a review of practice standards and regulations. The course follows the professional practice standards of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and has the student critically analyze, synthesize and evaluate the knowledge gained in all previous nurse anesthesia courses in order to prepare for the certification examination and clinical practice.

III. Course Outcomes
1. Demonstrate comprehensive evidence-based advanced nursing practice, skills and competencies in the care of patients undergoing various surgical procedures.
2. Critically analyze the anesthesia care required in complex surgical procedures.
3. Critically evaluate clinical and research databases for the professional aspects of nurse anesthesia used as clinical decision support resources.
4. Demonstrate competence in advanced technical skills such as management of a difficult airway and invasive monitoring.
5. Implement appropriate perioperative and postoperative pain management techniques.
6. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of professional aspects related to nurse anesthesia practice including: legal and ethical issues, federal and state issues, business related issues, and professional standards.
7. Use information systems/technology to support and improve patient care and healthcare systems.
8. Demonstrate advanced level of clinical judgment, systems thinking and accountability in delivery and evaluating evidence based care to improve patient outcomes and quality of care.
9. Integrate high ethical, legal, and professional standards of nurse anesthesia into decision making in clinical practice.
10. Synthesize concepts of cultural competency and diversity in implementing and evaluating interventions to improve health status.
11. Demonstrates ability to provide leadership that facilitates intra/ inter professional collaboration in practice.
12. Critically analyze health policy and related issues from the perspective of patients and other healthcare disciplines.
13. Role model effective communication skills and processes to lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

V. Evaluation and Grading Scale
This course must be passed with a grade of “B,” or above, before the student can progress in the nurse anesthesia sequence. (LSUHSC Catalog/Bulletin).
Grading Scale: A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = Below 60
The student must earn a grade of “B” (80), or above based on the following exams and course work. You must notify the instructor prior to the test time if you will be unable to take the test. Arrangements must be made with the instructor regarding make-up tests. The make-up test may be in a different format and may/may not be the same test as the original. The topics covered in the original exam will be the same as on the make-up exam.

VI. Teaching Strategies
A variety of teaching strategies will be used: lecture, guest lecturers, discussion, PowerPoint presentations, audiovisual media, small group activities, and blackboard discussion board.
Students are required to register for the Core Concepts Anesthesia Board Prep Exam Package which includes 5 practice exams. The cost of these exams ($90.00) is the responsibility of the student. The Core Concepts Anesthesia Board Prep Package includes 5 practice exams 3 Practice Exams plus Equipment and Professional Aspects Exam which will constitute the Quiz grade. The exams will be taken by the students in the NSTC on designated testing dates. Students can register and pay for the exam via http://www.ccanesthesiareview.com/LSUHSC.
Core Concepts Anesthesia Board Prep Exam Package offers a series of online board-like examinations designed to guide the student registered nurse anesthetist preparing for the National Certification Examination offered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists. The Practice Examinations serve to find areas of academic strength and weakness, familiarize the student with aspects and techniques involved in computerized test taking and assess the student's preparedness for the National Certification Examination. The Practice Exams contain all of the new question formats including multiple choice, multiple correct response, calculation, and hotspot and drag-&-drop questions.
