Student Evening & a talk on
“Cold Crucible Melting of Reactive Alloys and Tilt-casting of Ti-Al Turbine Blades”
By Prof. K A Pericleous, University of Greenwich
Casting of alloys requires pouring and filling of moulds from the melting stage, and subsequent solidification. Aerospace alloys of titanium, aluminium etc. tend to be highly reactive in the molten state and for this reason contact with a ceramic crucible must be avoided as it would introduce unacceptable impurities into the melt. A usual solution to this problem involves induction melting of the alloy in a water cooled copper crucible placed in a protective atmosphere and generating an induction current in the alloy. The speaker will talk about the difficulties of modelling this process, and how experiments on TiAl and Al melts have validated his work. His modelling methodology has also been used to simulate the casting of gamma TiAl into aero-engine turbine blades.
Venue: Engineering Lecture Theatre 1, University of Leicester
Refreshments at6.00 pm, talk commencing at 6.15p.m. Note change in times!
Non-members are welcome.
Students- free IoM3 membership if you attend!
Institute Staff in attendance for advice, please note that the staff member will be available after the talk has finished.
Direction to the Venue: Enter through University Entrance 1 on University Rd (Post code LE1 7RH). Press the buzzer at the barrier to inform security of your arrival. Go through the barrier, straight over until you come to a mini-roundabout. Turn left, follow the road and drive alongside the library building, then a shallow left turn. The Engineering building is on your right hand side. The door will be manned in the evening and the lecture theatre is on the first floor of the building. Local contact is 07718369708.
