MINUTES

The Minutes of the meeting held February 13, 2013 were reviewed. A change to the minutes was requested. Page 2, paragraph 2 should read: “Gregg Sgambati feels that the NJ laws and statues might have a preference for separate Environmental and Shade Tree Commissions and we should investigate.”

The Minutes were accepted as amended following a motion by Richard Seibert; seconded by George Esty.

OLD BUSINESS

Shade Tree Issues

George got an estimate for professional’s (John H. Anlian, Esq.) time to discuss our questions on a shade tree commission and being in a better position to get grant money for conducting a street tree inventory and doing tree maintenance. The cost is $300.00 per hour up to three hours. He estimated two hours would be sufficient time for the discussion. Hopefully, the township budget will be approved and we will have funds to start shade tree work.

SITE PLAN REVIEW

Pilot Corporation, BOA Dkt. 1262-08A

Plans were reviewed for erection of a truck scale, installation of underground storage tank for diesel emission fluid, approvals of existing walkway together with related signage and other site-related improvements.

Comments to Board of Adjustment:

“Approved - as long as installation of storage tanks meets all federal, state and local environmental regulations.

Is it a NJ law which requires a weight scale? What if the weight is over?”

OLD BUSINESS – CONTINUATION

Rich Wolf emphasized that the three main objectives he feels the Commission should work towards are:

1.  Determination of need for a shade tree commission in Mahwah. Combined with Environmental Commission or separate commission.

2.  Work on increasing public awareness on recycling. Communicate to residents that we need to increase the amount of materials being recycled and decrease the amount of non-recyclables being included in the bins.

3.  Continue making progress on obtaining Sustainable Jersey Certification

A fourth objective would be to work on Master Plan related ordinances.

At the next meeting, time will be allotted on the agenda to review Sustainable Jersey progress. Gregg Sgambati left the meeting at 8:20 p.m.

OTHER ITEMS

Still requesting a wireless router so we can access internet at the conference room table.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. The next meeting of the Environmental Commission will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Building, 475 Corporate Drive, Mahwah, N.J.
