TO PARENTS / CARERS WITH CHILDREN IN YEAR 2 – Summer Term
This term our IPC units are –

- The Magic Toymaker.
Below are the learning objectives for these units.
Explaining the Theme
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
- What the main external parts of the body are called
- What the five human senses are
- How we can see, hear, smell, taste and touch
- How the brain connects to other body parts
- How to eat healthily and get enough exercise
- How and why we use medicines
- Why body hygiene is important
In Technology, we’ll be finding out:
- How to plan and prepare a healthy meal
In International, we’ll be finding out:
- What malaria is and how we can prevent it
- If we can improve the health of the world's children

About toys and games from the past
How to decide if a toy is new or old
How to create our own toy museum
How we can learn about the past in different ways
In Science, we’ll be finding out:
How to sort toys based on what they are made out of
Which materials can be bent, squashed, twisted or stretched
What materials are best for making a bath toy
About pushes and pulls, and how things move
In Technology, we’ll be finding out:
About ‘magic’ toys that fool our eyes
How to design and make our own board game
How to design and make our own puppets
In Physical Education, we’ll be finding out:
About how different toys move
In ICT & Computing, we’ll be finding out:
How to make our own space-themed computer game
In International, we’ll be finding out:
About a popular game from another country and teaching others to play it
In addition to reading in SFA lessons we will continue to develop comprehension skills. There are three main types of comprehension question – literal, opinion, inference and deduction. This term we will be focusing on encouraging the children to make simple inferences about thoughts and feelings and reasons for actions in the texts they read.
Please ask your child lots of questions about what they have read when they read with you at home. It is very important that your child gains as much reading experience as possible. The children do not find comprehension tasks easy and they therefore need as much support as possible when discussing a text to help them to focus their thinking.
We will also be giving the children additional writing opportunities to practise the key skills of using correct punctuation, time connectives, describing words and joining words to create complex sentences. The children would benefit from writing opportunities at home too. We are very happy to look at any writing that is done at home – stories, lists, information, and poetry – anything to encourage the children to write!
A handwriting group which Mrs Small will be leading will take place at lunchtimes this term. Children who would benefit from opportunities to practice correct letter formation have been identified and will be invited to join her for this 20-minute session.
In Maths, the children need to practise times tables (2s, 3s, 5s, 10s) and be able to tell the time (o’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to and 5 minute intervals). They also need to be able to count groups of coins and find the right coins to make amounts to pay for things. Practicing these things at home will help to develop confidence and support your child in meeting the expected standards in maths by the end of year 2.
Homework and spellings will continue to be sent home each Friday. Please ensure this is completed and returned by Wednesday at the very latest. This is so I have an opportunity to mark the children’s work. Please encourage your child to do their homework themselves as it is a chance for them to consolidate what has been taught in school. We have had some occasions where parents have done the homework themselves and although this may be tempting, it is better to let me know if your child found it difficult.
If the weather is favourable this term we will sometimes be taking the children onto the field for PE. We have noticed that some children do not have a PE kit in school. Please make sure your child has the correct, clearly named PE kit which is a yellow Oasis Academy Byron T-shirt, navy shorts and a pair of plimsolls or trainers. T-shirts, shorts and PE bags can be purchased from the office.
Attendance is a key issue in the learning of every child. It is really important that the children attend school each day unless they are not well enough to do so. The children will no doubt be reminding you about our ‘In it to win it’ incentive which takes place at the end of every term.
