PREFLIGHT BRIEFING (3-20-08)
1. Profile of flight test
2. Pilot in Command is Applicant [61.47]
3. Advise Applicant that:
a. Oral questioning will continue - Perfection is not the standard
b. Testing with Plan of Action will continue IAW PTS
c. Will continue taking notes
d. Continue/discontinue if task is unsatisfactory
e. Circumstances under which a maneuver may be repeated:
1) Discontinuance of the Maneuver. A maneuver may be discontinued for a valid safety reason (i.e., an approach to a
landing is aborted and the applicant executes a go-around or other procedure to modify the originally planned maneuver).
2) Collision Avoidance. The performance of a maneuver may be interrupted due to the applicant’s action to avoid other
traffic or the examiner’s intervention on the flight controls to avoid another aircraft which the applicant could not have
seen due to a view limiting device or other factors.
3) Misunderstood Requests. A legitimate misunderstanding may occur between the applicant and the examiner when an
applicant does not understand the examiner’s request. However, the applicant’s failure to understand how to perform the
maneuver being requested is not grounds for repeating a maneuver.
4) Other Factors. A condition which distracts the examiner so that the examiner cannot adequately observe the applicant’s
performance of the maneuver, such as conflicting traffic or ATC instructions, may occur.
f. Unsatisfactory performance:
1) Exceeding aircraft limitations
2) Examiner intervention
3) Inappropriate emergency procedures
4) Outcome of the maneuver being seriously in doubt
5) Poor judgment
6) Not within approved standards
7) Failure to apply aeronautical knowledge
8) Not being the master of the aircraft
9)Consistently exceeding tolerances stated in the objective
10) Failure to take prompt corrective action when tolerances are exceeded
4. Transfer of controls
5. Collision avoidance
a. Looking for reported traffic takes precedence over test
b. Clearing the area before maneuvers
6. Emergencies - actual and simulated
a. Engine failure - takeoff and landing :
1) Any failure after takeoff below 500AGL is an emergency
2) I will announce all simulated engine failures. Unless announced, consider any failures as being real and treat
accordingly.
3) Simulated engine failures will be accomplished by ______.
b. Other emergencies- I will announce all simulated emergencies/failures. Unless announced, consider any failures
as being real and treat accordingly.
c. For simulated system failures, perform appropriate checklist and point to items to be performed. Do not
physically move switches, knobs, or controls unless told to do so.
d. Feathering (ME a/c only)
7. Verify that required documents have been returned to aircraft.
8. Verify that view limiting device is available in aircraft, & amount of fuel in airplane
9. Answer any questions
