Policy on House Officer Selection
Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
University of Michigan Health System
The selection of Obstetrics and Gynecology Residents at the University of Michigan follows the guidelines set forth in the GME Institutional Policy on House Officer Selection (No. GME-P-110-032204). The National Resident Matching Program is used for all first year residents. The final match rank list is developed through a 3-stage process:
1) Of the approximately 300 applications received through ERAS, approximately 50 candidates are selected for interview. All applications are reviewed by the program director and either a faculty or resident reviewer. Factors that are considered in offering an interview include:
· Evidence that the applicant excelled during medical school-especially in obstetrics and gynecology
· Excellent supporting letters of recommendation
· AOA status
· Demonstrated potential to assume a leadership role in obstetrics and gynecology
· There is no minimum USMLE score required to grant an interview, however, the applicant with scores of <200 will need to have a record of significant accomplishment indicating a high likelihood of success in residency training
· Advanced degrees
· Other added value to the program such as community involvement, volunteer work, research and outstanding activity outside the field of medicine.
“Audition rotations” are neither required nor encouraged to obtain an interview.
2) The interview process consists of:
· An informal social gathering with the residents the evening before interview day
· Group meetings with the chair and program director
· Individual formal interviews with two faculty and two residents
· Opportunity for informal interaction with the residents at a group lunch and small group tours
At the conclusion of each interview day, the faculty and resident interviewers hold a preliminary rank meeting where the applicants are stratified as either a top 5 candidate, highly acceptable, acceptable, or unacceptable. “Second look” visits are neither required nor encouraged. If, and only if, the applicant feels they need additional information about the program, they may return to spend additional time in the department. It is emphasized to the applicant that this second look has no bearing on their ranking.
3) After all interviews are completed, the final rank-list is complied at a meeting open to all faculty and residents.
