GAELTACHT SUMMER AWARDS

What’s on offer?

With support from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, awards are being offered to enable U.S. citizens, currently studying and teaching the Irish language in the United States, to participate in Irish language courses in Ireland’s Irish speaking regions (Gaeltachtaί) during the summer.

Please note that only Irish language courses, not Irish language and culture courses, are considered eligible courses for these Gaeltacht Awards. The minimum period of study is two weeks and the maximum period is six weeks.

Successful candidates will

  • have their tuition / fees, room (based on shared occupancy), and board paid directly to their course provider by the Commission. A list of course providers can be found here. The maximum amount paid will be €2,395.00.
  • be responsible for applying to the course provider and their own travel and any other living costs.

Please note that these are not Fulbright Awards but awards from the Ireland-United States Commission for Education Exchange.

Who can apply?

U.S. citizens or naturalized U.S. citizens living in the U.S who are currently:

  • Enrolled in Irish language courses in the U.S. and have completed at least one year or Irish language instruction
  • Teaching the Irish language in the U.S. for more than one year.

Preference will be given to applicants who:

  • are currently enrolled on a for-credit course in a recognized U.S. higher education institution as part of their undergraduate or postgraduate studies
  • have not participated on a Gaeltacht / Irish Language course in Ireland before.

APRIL – MAY 2018: Award Administration

June and July 2018: Awardees in Ireland
