A SPECIAL VISITOR: Immediately after Shanahan concluded his post-practice press conference, he made a beeline for former University of Colorado quarterback John Hessler, who attended practice in a wheelchair as he continues his arduous rehabilitation from injuries suffered in an automobile accident last November.

"Mental therapy," Hessler said, glancing at the team as it went through 10 minutes of post-practice work. "I used to do what they do, so it's awesome seeing it."

When asked if he wanted to throw a football to his former teammate, one-time CU tight end and current Broncos left tackle Matt Lepsis, he laughed.

"No, he's too fat. He's not allowed to catch anymore," Hessler said to a bank of cameras and microphones, a broad smile crossing his face. "Don't tell him I said that!"
