JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
FAMILY SUPPORT ASSISTANT- Residential Student Services Team

POSITION PURPOSE:
- The Family Support Assistant lives in the dormitory, is on 24-hr call, and is responsible for collaborating with instructional staff, clinical staff, community partners and residents to develop a boarding environment conducive to healthy family development and learning;
- The ideal candidate will have a background that includes knowledge of human development, maternal and family health, early childhood development and/or related experience working in residence halls, life-skills education or with teen parents.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Actively participates in creating an exemplary school environment;
- Collaborates effectively within a non traditional school schedule and organizational structure;
- Assists in the development and achievement of school goals/objectives and the planning/implementation of the schools’ instructional programs including Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB), HighScope, Parents as Teachers and MELD;
- Facilitate learning within the dormitory that is linked to the academic goals of the student and the school;
- Help create and maintain a boarding environment conducive to family development and learning;
- Encourage programming aimed at students’ needs;
- Work across departments to promote and provide educational and social programming that develops student ability to meet personal, academic and non-academic goals.
- Provide individual visits to non-boarding families assigned to their support group
- Facilitate weekly parent support group using MELD Parent Education and Support Curricula;
- Work with families to promote security and safety awareness including personal safety, fire safety and emergency preparedness;
- Maintain a good sense of humor and support the sharing of wonderful ideas, and having fun;
- Actively commits to a school-wide, participatory management structure;
- Actively uses a holistic, relationship building approach as a disciplinary model;
- Participates in on- and off-site (national) staff development opportunities during
the summer and academic school year;
- Actively involved in school self-study and accreditation process.
Ideal candidates will be available by July 15th, 2007.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with urban families;
- Experience with residence hall or dormitory management;
- Bachelors Degree in Human Development, Psychology, Social Work or a related field;
- 3-5 years of experience working in a multi-systemic environment;
- Knowledge of Family Literacy practices is a plus;
- Familiarity with Parents as Teachers and MELD Curricula is a plus.
