Report to: Staff Team Manager.

Salary: £18,278 pro rata.

Hours of work:Between 24-37hours per week,depending on availability.

Organisation Overview

Upward Mobility is a registered Scottish charity working in Edinburgh and the Lothian’s providing innovative, educational workshops and personalised support for people with learning and other complex disabilities. Our goal is to promote the self-confidence and social welfare of our students through assistance to engage with meaningful and progressive educational activities, aiding their development of practical, social and life skills and their ability and confidence to participate more fully in society.

SCOPE OF ROLE: Ensuring effective communication with Staff Team Managers on daily operations, resolving incidents, providing help, leadership / guidance to students and Community Project Workers.

MEASUREMENTS: Successful / thorough resolution of incidents and the reporting of more serious concerns/incidents to Staff Team Manager. Facilitate the follow-up of incidents and the completion of progress reports to deadline.

PURPOSE OF POST: To work independently and as part of a team to ensure a high quality service and workshop program for Students. To promote and assist implementation of the strategic aims, objectives and ethos of Upward Mobility.

Primary Responsibilities:

•To intervene and resolve incidents and carry out necessary follow-up and liaison. Ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed including student reports and other supplementary information that is required.

•Provide feedback to Staff Team Manager on daily basis.

•Attend Student reviews and compile progress reports when required and to deadline.

•Attend daily briefing with coordination and checking all necessary paperwork is in place at the start of each working day. Conduct the morning announcements to Community Project Workers and Students.

•Oversee the effective implementation and running of breaks and lunch throughout the working day and report any issues to Staff Team Manager.

•Maintaining up-to-date Inventory Index and identifying and listing material / equipment needs and priorities.

•Provide supervision to volunteers.

•Conducting Risk Assessments on Workshops, Activities and Environment and ensuring Risk Assessments are reviewed and up-to-date.

To work as part of a team providing high a quality support and program for our students to assist them in developing practical, social and life skills in order to participate more fully and more independently in society.

The Team Leader would be expected to:

Take initiative in identifying where there are operational gaps and look to work with team to resolve and ensure that operational bases are covered (including staff / volunteer cover for student discos and events).

Set leading example of thorough providing high quality paperwork, documentation and correspondence. Thorough and easy to follow workshop lesson plans, block planning, ILPRs, student reports and Team Leader reports / reporting.

Familiarity with Student Documentation including support plans / risk assessments and strategies for managing challenging behavior.

•Report back any areas of risk, not previously identified, to Staff Team Manager or Support Compliance Manager.

•Maintain confidentiality and commit not to divulge information to third parties unless consent to share information has been given in writing and agreed by the Support Service Manager.

•Work in accordance with the Health & Safety Act 1974, the Data Protection Act 1998 and National Care Standards and to commit the workings of that policy to memory.

•Practical and productive familiarity with Upward Mobility Policies and Procedures.

•Preventative Action: Identify situations, which could potentially escalate, resulting in an incident, and intervene to ensure incident prevention / de-escalation.

Support the further development, quality and professionalism for Upward Mobility Workshops, Practices and Service Provision.

Daily Coordination:

Confident and practical understanding of basic use in looking up staff / student schedules.

Reduce traffic and escalation of queries / issues that are channeled to the Coordination Office. The team leader should be able to manage a majority of ‘real-time’ staff / student cover and adjustment requirements throughout the day through competent use of People Planner and without consultation of coordination (in majority cases).

Team Building

•Ensure good team working and recognise /report positive contributions from Staff.

•Monitor the level of staff engagement with students ensuring that students are not left on their own physically but also socially.

•Contribute to the overall development of the service and promote a positive understanding of the Students, Employees, Trustees and Upward Mobility as a charitable organisation.

•Promote Quarterly Staff Question and Answer – encouraging broad participation, input, feedback and attendance collating staff questions for senior management and fielding any questions which can be answered by Team Leaders.

•Proactive Engagement – Identifying and flagging any potential staff issues or concerns and working with Staff Team Managers to ensure that issues are managed, de-escalated and resolved to avoid escalation. Identifying and flagging if a more frequent Q&A would be of benefit and taking forward.

•Help identify opportunities for staff social activities & evenings which should be held quarterly. Upward Mobility does have a budget for this and we do want to celebrate the hard work that is done at the project.

Professional Development

•Participate in training courses / seminars as required.

•Prepare, attend and engage in regular supervisions, appraisals and performance review - accepting and providing constructive feedback.

•Endeavor to promote and maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment at Upward Mobility with cooperation of colleagues for safety and wellbeing of all students and staff.

•To undertake any other additional responsibilities issued.

Desirable Skills:

•Current and clean UK driving license.

•Experience of providing support or care to people living in the community.

•SVQ 2 and above in Health and Social Care / Learning Disabilities Assessment Framework.

•Creative background and ability to facilitate workshop sessions specific to the arts and healthy living. Training and support will be available for development in this area.

TRAINING: A 4 course Induction must be completed before commencement of employment. Team Leaders will also be required to attend on-going training from time to time to maintain their skills and to comply with Upward Mobility registration requirements.
