This month, we are including a few artist opportunities which have submission deadlines in the latter part of May. In particular, the Community Arts Council of Richmond has a May 22 postmark deadline coming up in just a few days. Over 1300$ in prize money. Worth considering! And we also have our winners for the Richmond Arts Awards!And Doors Open is happening with events across the entire city from June 2nd to June 4th! Exciting stuff!

The 10th instalment of Doors Open Richmond is a free weekend-long, city-wide public celebration of heritage, culture and the arts. In 2016, 42 sites located throughout Richmond received over 12,800 site visits. This year an eclectic and exciting blend of destinations will open their doors and offer culturally rich and inclusive experiences for free. These destinations may include heritage sites, museums, places of worship, green spaces, specialty business, art galleries and artist studios.

June 2Doors Open Richmond 2017 – Opening Celebration

Free kick-off event! Join us for the opening celebration of the 10th Doors Open Richmond and begin exploring the richness of the City’s heritage, arts and culture. Discover how Richmond’s cultural heritage combines to make this such a great place to live, work, and play. Evening highlights include the official opening of Doors Open Richmond at 6:30pm, live classical Chinese music in Richmond Museum, and the Richmond Art Gallery’s Omnis Temporalis performance at 7:30pm (Please note, this performance does have some adult themes.) The Richmond Cultural Centre and Plaza will be filled with live music and family activities. Two food trucks offering classic comfort food for sale will be parked on site. Enjoy an evening in the cultural heart of Richmond.

The Richmond Orchestra and Chorus is proud to present Canada 150: Canada’s Music from Coast to Coast. How do we start to choose music for this exciting concert? A good place to start would be to look to our First Nations people whose musical heritage predates the birth of Canada by more than a thousand years. And we shouldn’t forget the first settlers from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland who gave us our Celtic music traditions.

Travel back in time to the year 1917 with these walking tours. A narrator leads you though the streets of Steveston to see five short historical plays performed. The Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society (VAHMS) and the Vancouver Lipont Art Centre are pleased to present Generation One Art Exhibition during the 21st annual explorASIAN festival ( which promotes national Asian Heritage Month in May. The Generation One Art Exhibition was created in 2009 as a signature program of the VAHMS festival to feature both established and emerging local artists, who are first-generation Asian Canadians by immigration or birth, and to provide a forum for exploring new expressions of Canadian identity. This year, the exhibition will focus on issues of social integration facing Asian Canadians of various generations. Free admission.

June 8Cut and Paste Comics with Sean Karemaker

Comic book artist Sean Karemaker leads a hands-on workshop introducing the process of writing for comics. Participants will work with a series of cut-out illustrations and panels to create a narrative for a two-page comic. All materials provided. Free admission. June 10Holly Schmidt: Vanitas
Richmond Art Gallery 7700 Minoru Gate 1:30pm-4:30pm
Explore the vanitas characteristics of Dutch still life painting through the creation of floral arrangements. The workshop will begin with a look at how these painters captured the passing of earthly life through imagery of abundant bouquets on the verge of decay. Following this, participants will be invited to forage for foliage in Minoru Park, and with a range of local blossoms create their own still life to be photographed. Participants are welcome to take their arrangements at the end of the workshop. Digital images of their arrangement will be shared. Participants are asked to bring their own vase (a vase or bowl with a wide mouth is recommended) and a pair of small pruners.

June 10Pull of the Net Speakers' Series and short film: Stó:lō – The Big River

The Pull of the Net exhibit celebrates the importance of Canada’s commercial fishing industries on both the East and West Coasts of Canada. It is a colourful, family-friendly exhibit that touches on some big topics such as Aboriginal fishing traditions, immigration, fisheries management, and the diversification of the industry over time. To delve deeper into these topics, local experts will share their perspectives and insight on these topics with a 4-part speakers’ series on Saturday afternoons through the summer. Admission is FREE. Fishing has sustained local Aboriginal people nutritionally, culturally, and spiritually for thousands of years. Stó:lō Cultural Historian, Dr. Sonny McHalsie, will share his personal connections to fishing on the Fraser River following the screening of a short film, Stó:lō – The Big River. Produced by the Fraser River Discovery Centre, the 12-minute film shares the Musqueam and Stó:lō oral histories of how salmon came to the Fraser River.

Discover the work of Wang Duo, a revered Chinese calligrapher from the Ming and Qing Dynasties,and see his legacy in Richmond today. You can also explore objects and ideas previous generationshave left for us. Get inspired to create your own legacy!Highlights include Wang Duo’s calligraphy and rubbings, and historic legacies from an egg decorated with the City’s coat of armsto a horse-hoof inkwell and printing press. 4pm To celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, the Textile Arts Guild of Richmond (TAGOR), Richmond Public Library (RPL) and the Media Lab have embarked on a collaborative legacy project called Our Canadian Bookcase. These groups have created a hanging quilt in the form of a bookcase featuring Canada`s great literary minds as suggested by the Richmond public. Our Canadian Bookcase will be unveiled to the public at a special event on Thursday, June 15th at the Brighouse branch, and will travel throughout the community from July through November 2017. June 15Glen Chatten with The Men of Quiet Desperation

It is impossible not to feel the depth of being human, with all of its frailties, joys, sadness, fears and strengths when listening to one of Glenn's songs or instrumental compositions. Whether supported by his band (The Men of Quiet Desperation) or as a soloist, Glenn's mastered ability as an acoustic finger style guitarist (akin to Bruce Cockburn, Joni Mitchell or Michael Hedges) to mesh mesmerizing eclectic rhythms with profound lyrics and melodies, is simply inspirational. Canada’s 150th with Anne takes a spin on the popular tale of Anne of Green Gables while paying homage to Canada’s 150th birthday this year. June 20Simon Choa-Johnston – Author Event

“The House of Wives” by Simon Choa-Johnston is an historical novel inspired by the lives of the author’s grandfather who was a 19th century Jewish opium merchant. He plied his trade between India and Hong Kong and married two wives, one from India and the other a Chinese woman. All three lived together in a mansion called Kingsclere. During the author event, Simon C. Johnson will present about the background of the opium trade, the route his ancestors took and how they became involved in the trade as well as women issues of the time. This presentation is followed by a Q&A and discussion on subjects such as history versus fiction, the morality of opium trade, the custom of wealthy men having multiple wives and how that affects their offspring.
