Bridge Naming: “Virginia State Trooper Leo Whitt Memorial Bridge”

Issue: Commemorative naming of the bridge on Route 667 (Johns Road) that spans Interstate 95, in Prince George County.

Facts: On January 14, 2014, the Board of Supervisors of Prince George County passed a resolution requesting the bridge on Route 667 (Johns Road) that spans Interstate 95 be named the “Virginia State Trooper Leo Whitt Memorial Bridge”.

Virginia State Trooper Leo Whitt was hired by the Virginia Department of State Police on July 1, 1964. He served the citizens of the Commonwealth for 21 years and gave his life in defense of others. The Board of Supervisors of Prince George County wishes to memorialize the life and sacrifice of Virginia State Trooper Leo Whitt, by having the bridge on Route 667 (Johns Road) that spans Interstate 95, named the “Virginia State Trooper Leo Whitt Memorial Bridge”.

Recommendations: VDOT recommends this request be approved.

Action Required by CTB: The Code of Virginia requires a majority of the CTB members to approve a resolution naming the bridge. A resolution will be provided for the Board’s consideration.

Result if Approved: The bridge on Route 667 (Johns Road) that spans Interstate 95 in Prince George County will be known and signed as the “Virginia State Trooper Leo Whitt Memorial Bridge”.

In accordance with law, the County will reimburse the costs associated with providing and installing the necessary signs and VDOT will invoice accordingly.

Options: Approve, Deny, or Defer.

Public Comments/Reactions: VDOT is not aware of any opposition to this proposal.
