Theoretical Project

This assignment includes the following:

  1. A theoretical Microsoft®PowerPoint®presentation
  2. An interactive demonstration with the class, including ice breaker
  3. A written outline of an eight-session group counseling series
This assignment is due in Week Sevenor Week Eight, as assigned by your instructor.

Note. Students are expected to read the appropriate chapters assigned for each of the interactive theoretical presentations.

Your Learning Team will select a clinical issue (for example, social phobia) and a theoretical model(such as a cognitive-behavior) as the basis for this project. Your instructormust approve your Learning Team’s selectedclinical issue and theoretical model. Your instructor may be used as a consultant and provide additional information or videos to enhance your Learning Team’s presentation.

  • Select one of the theoretical models for the presentation:
  • Person-centered approaches to group work
  • Adlerian approaches to group work
  • Psychodynamic approaches to group work
  • Gestalt approaches to group work
  • Existential approaches to group work
  • Cognitive-behavioral approaches to group work
  • Multimodal approaches to group work

Presentation and Interactive Demonstration

  • The length of the presentation, including a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, icebreaker, session demonstration, interactive theoretical activity, and series presentation, mustbe 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Microsoft®PowerPoint® presentation: Learning Teams begin their presentations with a Microsoft®PowerPoint® slide show, documentingthe clinical issue they selected along with the theoretical approach they studied. The slide show should include the history and development of the theory, the major tenets of the theory, and specific application of the theory (method) to group work.

Learning Teams are expected to clearly articulate the connection between the clinical issue (such as social phobia) and the theoretical basis for group work (such as a cognitive-behavior) approach to this issue. Whereasrequired readings on various theories may provide a good outline for the presentations, you are required to research other sources to enrich their presentations.

  • Icebreaker: The interactive component of this assignment should begin with an icebreaker. In this part of the presentation, the team members are to involve the class in an interactive activity. To the extent possible, the activity must reflect the belief system inherent in the theoretical approach.
  • Interactive theoretical activity: In this part of the presentation, the presenting Learning Team will discuss its chosen topics in greater depth and demonstrate its application through a significant role-play or session demonstration. Learning Teams should role-playan important component of the relevant method or approach in addition to involving members of the audience. The team should make every effort to show the connection between the role-played activities and the theory on which these activities are based. Teams should also discuss the relevance of the activity for the specific clinical issue they have selected. In other words, teams should be able to explain why this is important in addressing their chosen clinical issue.

Eight-Session Group Counseling Plan

  • Outline: Developan outline of an eight-session group counseling series which focuses on the selected theoretical model. The outline is to be given to each student and to the faculty member. The outline must describe the following:
  • A brief description of the group, including client’s presenting issue, admission criteria, and basic goals to be accomplished by the last session
  • Minimum and maximum number of clients in the group; client age range and sex
  • Length and frequency of each session, specifying if lead by one or two counselors
  • An agenda for each session, including possible topics for discussion, videos, small- or large- group activities, and any special equipment needed for group activities. Show how each discussion topic or activity relates to the overall goals and purposes of the group
  • A plan for termination of the group counseling series

Format your presentation and outline consistent with APA guidelines.
