Seniors,You should continue your college applications this month. Remember to visit college websites to determine the deadlines for Open House registrations, applications, scholarships and special programs. Be sure to meet all applicable deadlines. Please see your counselor if you need assistance with anything to plan for your life after high school. Here are the October scholarships; you should apply for all scholarships for which you meet the eligibility criteria.

King’s College Scholastic Achievement Scholarship: $2,000. Must have weighted GPA at least 3.5, and plan to enroll in August 2014. King’s also offers $1,000 scholarships through DECA, HOSA and FBLA. Applications are available from club advisors. You will need to supply high school transcript and other required documentation, write an essay and attend an interview at state competitive events in the spring. Consult website for more details:

John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest: First place winner receives $10,000; 2nd place winner receives $1,000 and up to 5 finalists receive $500 each. Write an essay on an act of political courage by a US elected official who served during or after 1956. For contest information, registration and to submit essay, visit website at Deadline for submission is January 6, 2014.

Colgate “HAZ LA U” Scholarship Program: Grand Prize winner receives $15,000 Educational Grant; 20 2nd place winners will receive a $2,500 Educational Grant each. Must be US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident; must have GPA of at least 3.0; must plan to enroll full-time at 2-year or 4-year college/university in Fall 2014; must complete the FAFSA after January 1, 2014. Apply on website: Application Deadline is January 20, 2014.

NC Hispanic College Fund Scholarship: The North Carolina Hispanic College Fund awards annual scholarships worth between $500 and $2,500. Scholarships recipients are recent graduates of North Carolina high schools who are of Hispanic/Latino background. Recipients of a NC Hispanic College Fund scholarship must enroll in a degree program at a community college or a 2 or 4 year college/university and be committed to public service and community development. Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) Scholarship: Essay contest, $10,000 first prize, $5,000 second prize, three $1,000 runner-up prizes and four $500 winners from remaining entrants. You must write an essay between 800 and 1000 words on the provided topic. Enter at website:Application Deadline is January 1, 2014.

Forgivable Education Loans for Service (FELS) This program provides funding for NC students pursuing programs leading to careers in areas with critical need, such as nursing, teaching, allied health fields and medicine. Students who receive funding through this program must sign a promissory note agreeing to work in NC after graduation from college in an approved position, one year for each academic year of funding received. Students who do not perform the required service must repay the loans in cash, with interest. FELS application and program information will be available in November 2013 at: The priority deadline for submitting the FELS application is April 1, 2014.

National Co-Op Scholarship Program: 160 scholarships totaling $4.1 million. You must be admitted to one of the nine institutions listed in the scholarship brochure. Apply at website: Application Deadline is February 14, 2014.

Young Entrepreneur Foundation:Are you a young entrepreneur? Graduating seniors who own operate their own small business are eligible to receive a 2014 NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award. Visit www:NFIB.com/YEA for more information and to apply online after October 1, 2013. Application deadline is December 18, 2013.

The Christian Connector: This is a free Christian College information service, as well as a $2,500 Christian college scholarship drawing. Students can log onto to request information and automatically be entered in the scholarship drawing.

NC State University Centennial Scholars Program: This is a scholarship program at NC State for students interested in engineering, business management, chemistry, polymer chemistry, forensic, medical fields, international studies, design, apparel, sourcing, fashion, merchandising or retail management. This scholarship will cover approximately 50% of the basic in-state costs of attending NCSU. East Montgomery may nominate two students for this scholarship. Interested students should see their counselor by October 25, 2013.

UNC-Charlotte Levine Scholars Program:The Levine Scholars Program offers a 4-year scholarship that includes full tuition, room/board, a new laptop and four summer experiences that will develop leadership skills and social awareness. In order to be considered for this scholarship, seniors must be nominated by their school counselor. Interested students should see their counselor by October 11, 2013.

Horatio Alger Scholarship: 50+ Awards – To be eligible for the Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs, applicants must meet the following criteria: 1) Be enrolled full-time as a high school senior in the United States, progressing normally toward graduation in spring of 2014 with plans to enter a college in the US no later than the fall following graduation. 2) Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited non-profit public or private institution in the US.(Students may enter their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution) For an application, go to:

Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award - $500 - BBG provides the Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award to recognize and reward a student who demonstrates a passion for volunteering, while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
1. Over the past 2 years a student must have completed a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work.
2. Over the past 2 years a student must have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or greater.
3. A student must be under the age of 21 years of age on the day of the deadline.
4. A student must submit an essay on the topic prior to the deadline.

Odenza Marketing Group Volunteer Scholarship - $500 - The main goal of the Odenza Marketing Group Volunteer Award is to encourage students to make a positive contribution to their individual communities, while providing scholarship awards to those who have done so over the previous 12 months.
ELIGIBILITY
A) Be between the ages of 16 and 22 on December 30th, 2013
B) A student must also possess a GPA of 2.5 or higher in his/her last academic year.
C) A student must have contributed at least 50 hours of volunteer (non-paid) service within his/her community over the last 12 months. Please ensure that you have completed this amount of hours and that a person within the organization(s) is willing to confirm that you have volunteered this amount of time. (Note that we will only contact the organization(s) in the event that you are chosen as the scholarship award winner.)
D) A student must be a resident of Canada or the United States and must attend a school in Canada or the United States

Maple Leaf Dentistry Scholarship - $500 - The main goal of the Maple Leaf Dentistry Scholarship is to inspire young people to make contributions to their individual communities, while providing awards to those who are currently making a positive difference in their own neighborhoods, towns and cities.
ELIGIBILITY
1. To be eligible a student must be attending school at the undergraduate level in the fall of 2014 and can be enrolled in any year of their undergraduate program. High School seniors who will graduate in 2014 are considered eligible. If you are attending a trades and/or technical school, the program must be at least 2 years in length or longer.
2. A student must have done at least 100 hrs of volunteer work over the last 2 years.*You are required to name someone in the organization that can verify the time you spent participating in volunteer activities. We will only contact the individual you name in the event that you are chosen as the winner.
3. Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in his/her last academic year.
4. A student must be a resident of the United States
