DO THE LOCOMOTION WITH WNO THIS SPRING
Intrigue, melodrama and skulduggery feature in Welsh National Opera’s Spring 2010 season including an opera set on the world famous Orient Express and two of the greatest love stories. WNO will be calling at Milton Keynes Theatre from 30 March –3 April.
The Abduction from the Seraglio an exhilarating and delightful comedy is irresistibly entertaining, set on the 1920s Orient Express. Director James Robinson’s new production of Mozart’s witty and highly entertaining opera sees Andrew Kennedy as Belmonte and Lisette Oropesa making her UK debut as Konstanze. Greek bass Petros Magoulas also makes his UK debut as Osmin and Wynne Evans and Claire Ormshaw return to WNO. The performance will be conducted by Anthony Negus.
Best loved opera Tosca, a tale of desire, deception and self sacrifice, set in Rome at the time of Napoleon, see's the revival of Michael Blakemore’s stunning period production of Puccini’s enthralling classic and welcomes back Alwyn Mellor to the Company as Tosca and the return of Robert Hayward as Scarpia. Geraint Dodd is Cavaradossi and Simon Phillippo conducts.
Bizet's masterpiece Carmen is full to the brim with instantly recognisable music and has at its heart on of the most charismatic characters in opera. The return of WNO’s classic production in the 135th anniversary year of the first performance of Bizet’s ever-popular opera distils this passionate tale right down to its essence. Patricia Bardon is Carmen with Gwyn Hughes Jones as Don José. Former Cardiff Singer of the World Wales representative Sarah-Jane Davies makes her WNO debut as Micaёla. The Company’s newest Associate Artist Carolyn Dobbin will sing Mercedes, while former Associate Artist Joanne Boag returns as Frasquita. Carmen is conducted by Frederic Chaslin.
