Medication Procedure

Out of State / Out of the Country Field Trips

The following is the procedure for the administration of medication to students while on an out of state/country field trip, if your child must take medication during this time frame. It is required that the procedure be followed as outlined below.

The travel agency responsible for coordinating the out of country trip may have specific guidelines regarding transporting medication in and out of the country which must be followed as well.

1) All medications will be stored with a designated teacher – NOT a parent chaperone.

2) Teachers will administer ONLY the medications that the parent has given written permission for.

3) Your child will come to the identified teacher and he/she will self medicate from a large envelope/plastic bag which has the medication in it.

4) The teacher will be responsible for reminding your child when it is time to take his/her medication.

5) Please review this procedure with your child.

6) The transporting of medication guidelines may vary depending on the destination of the trip as well as the travel agency guidelines.

7) It is recommended that copies of prescriptions for any critically important medications be brought on the trip in case medications are lost or destroyed accidentally.

If your child must take daily medication, as needed medication for discomfort or liquid medication:

·  The parent/guardian will place all medication in a large plastic zip lock bag that has the student’s name on it.

·  All prescription medications should be in the original container and have the doctor’s order/pharmacy label on the medication container.

·  All over the counter medication should be in the original container and contain only the amount of medication needed during the trip.

If your child carries an inhaler:

·  Be sure that the inhaler is current and has sufficient medication for the duration of the trip.

·  The inhaler should be in the original box with the doctor’s prescription (pharmacy label) on the front of the box.

·  Your child may keep all inhaled medications on his/her person if developmentally appropriate.

·  Instruct your child to notify a teacher/chaperone that they are using their inhaler so that they can be watched carefully.

If your child has a known severe allergy and has an Epi-pen:

·  The auto injector should be in the original box with the doctor’s prescription (pharmacy label) on the front of the box.

·  The Epi-pen should be carried by the student and with them at all times. It is highly suggested to send two Epi-pens so that one can remain with an adult.

·  Check expiration date to verify that the Epi-pen is current and has not expired.

·  Review with your child all dietary, medication and environmental precautions.

·  Once an Epi-pen has been administered, the student will be transported to a hospital for evaluation and observation.
