Doug,

Look forward to seeing you in AZ. Say Hi to Norm for me

> >What concerns do you have about preliminary exams in counseling

> >psychology that you would like the group to address?

If cp moves to a common "model training program", isn't this going

to put pressure on for a common prelim exam?

> >Do you require written comprehensive examinations in psychology(or

> >alternative project) in your program? If yes, specify the following

> >information:

At the moment, we only have written comprehensive. Student

must pass written completely. Once that is done they have as oral

as part of the comprehensive. The oral segment usually mimics an

oral of the licensing board. Students must pass both segments

successfully to pass the comp exam.

> >1. length, and setting of the exam.

Written is over 5 areas (2 hrs @ area) stretched over 2 days.

> >2. when the exam is typically completed by students

during 3rd yr or later

> >3. content areas typically covered in the exam.

Assessment; Vocational; Counseling & Professoinal Issues;

Developmental; and Psychopathology & Personality

> >4. whether reading lists are provided to students and, if yes, who

> >provides the list.

Different people are responsible for different sections. List is up to

people responsible for each section if faculty chose to provide a list

5. grading system and who grades the exam

Most of it is graded by counseling faculty, but a couple of non-

counseling faculty are involved also

6. > >proportion who fail

Small proportion (5%?) fail written segment completely--which

requires doing the entire written exam over.

20%(?) fail a portion of the written--which requrires re-taking that

segment successfully before they can move onto oral

7. consequences of failing

Students given 2 chances to pass complete written successfully to

move onto oral segment.

Students given 2 chances (after passing writtens) to pass oral

> >Do you require oral comprehensive examinations in your program? If

> >yes, specify the following information if it is different from the

> >written exam:

> >1. length, and setting of the exam.

3 oral examiners; 2 hr max for oral

> >2. when the exam is typically completed by students

must pass written to move onto oral. Direct students they must

complete oral within 4 weeks of notification of passing written

> >3. content areas typically covered in the exam.

mostly like licensing oral (but committee may ask about other

> >4. whether reading lists are provided to students and, if yes, who

> >provides the list.
