3Definitions
Shed-up – filling the shed with sheep.
Pen-up – filling up the catching pen with sheep.
Tally – counting sheep.
On-farm procedures refer to the verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for shearing operations.
Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Handle sheep in shed and yards for shearing.
Rangeshed-up, pen-up, tally.
Performance criteria
1.1The flow of sheep in the shed is maintained without unnecessary delay, or injury, and with minimal stress to sheep.
1.2Sheep are tallied and recorded in accordance with the on-farm system in use and without delaying shearers.
1.3Sheep are handled in such a manner that avoids injury or risk of injury to sheep or handler.
1.4Sheep are handled in a manner which avoids shed stain.
Element 2
Carry out board-work during shearing.
Performance criteria
2.1Board-work is carried out smoothly and without leading to delays to other shearing operations.
2.2The shearing board is kept free of excess wool.
Element 3
Prepare wool for pressing as directed by a supervisor.
Performance criteria
3.1Fleeces are prepared to best advantage with minimal skirting in accordance with supervisor's instructions.
3.2Oddments are sorted into appropriate fadges.
3.3Wool is prepared in a timely manner to prevent the build up of excess wool.
Element 4
Press wool as directed by a supervisor.
Performance criteria
4.1Bales are prepared and labelled in accordance with on-farm procedures, and within given weight limits.
4.2Records are kept in accordance with wool industry requirements and on-farm procedures.
4.3Wool pressing is carried out efficiently and without risk to the operator or other personnel, and equipment.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
