- Multiple European monarchs and nobles attempted to use a shifting balance of power away from the Habsburg monarchies as their opportunity to aggrandize themselves.
- The assumption of the Bohemian throne by Frederick, the Elector of the Palatinate, was an attempt to expand his dynasty’s power and influence in Europe.
- The French monarchy sought to use the fighting in the Holy Roman Empire as a means to weaken its Habsburg rivals in both the Empire and Spain.
