a) What are the two reasons for using layered protocols?

b) What is main difference between TCP and UDP?

c) What does the Nyquist theorem have to do with communication?

e) How does a DSU (Digital Service Unit) differ from a modem?

f) Why Data link protocols almost always put the CRC in a trailer rather than in a header?

g) When the IPv6 protocol is introduced, does the ARP protocol have to be changed?

h) Compare and contrast HDLC with PPP.

2. a) Define switch. List the three conventional switching methods. (5)

b) Explain the binary exponential back off algorithm. (5)

3. a) What are the problems encountered when IEEE 802.4 LAN as source is connected to IEEE 802.3 LAN as destination. (5)

b) Write three major problems with CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). (5)

4. a) What is unicast routing? Discuss unicast routing protocols. (5)

b) Explain distance vector routing with the help of an example. Also discuss count-to-infinity problem. (5)

5. a) What is silly window syndrome in TCP flow control? Explain Nagel’s and Clark’s solution for the syndrome created by sender and receiver. (5)

b) Explain TCP segment header? Also discuss the TCP connection management. (5)

6. a) Explain how SMTP can handle transfer of videos and images? Also explain the advantages of IMAP 4 over POP 3 mail access protocols. (5)

b) i) When web pages are sent out, they are prefixed

by MIME headers. Why? (2.5)

ii) Explain the difference between http and https protocols. (2.5)

7. a) Compare and contrast between pure ALOHA, slotted ALOHA and CSMA. (5)

b) What do you understand by Quality of service parameters? List various Quality of service parameters. (5)
