Karayannis, Miltiades (Milt), is a Greek citizen, born in Nigrita (Serres),and Professor of Analytical Chemistry. He graduated from the Chemistry Department of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, (1958); he served in the Greek Army (1058-1960) and received his PhD in Physical Chemistry (1965) from the University of Bonn (Germany). He worked as postdoctoral researcher in Brookhaven National Lab., USA (1966-68), as Assistant ProfessorNew YorkUniversity (1967-1968) and University of Urbana (Illinois) (1968-1969). In the years 1969-1979 he was a faculty member, of the Chemistry Department, of the University of Athensas Assistant Professor. From 1979-2001 he was full Professor of Analytical Chemistry in the University of Ioannina (Greece). From 2001 he is a retired Professor and active as Emeritus Professor in the University of Ioannina participating in research projects and supervising graduate students.
Prof. Karayannis has been Vice-Rector of the University of Ioannina, Chairman of the Chemistry Dept., Director of the Section of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Chairman of the Technical Council of the University e.t.c. He is a member of: the Association of Greek Chemist, the Division of Analytical Chemistry (DAC/EuChemS), the EURACHEM, the MESAEP (Mediterranean Scientific Association of Environmental Protection) and the ECTN (European Chemistry Thematic Network). He is member of many steering and International Scientific Committees and the organizer of many International Symposia and Workshops in the field of Analytical Chemistry.
Prof. Karayannis worked for many years on the development of Analytical Methods based on Electrochemistry, Kinetic Methods of Analysis, Spectroscopic Methods, Chemical- and Biosensors, Environmental Analysis and Chromatographic Analysis. His research was supported and funded by many European and National sources.
Prof. Karayannis is the author of two books (Chemical Instrumentation, Treatment Evaluation and Presentation of Analytical Data) and of more than 150 original scientific papers published in International Journals of Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and Biosensing etc. His work was also presented in many International and National Conferences, where he contributed as active participant or invited speaker. His research work was cited from about 2000 other scientists.
For more than thirty years Prof. Karayannis has trained more than 5000 students lecturing on all fields of Analytical Chemistry (Qualitative-, Quantitative-, Instrumental Analysis) Chemical Instrumentation, Environmental Analytical Methods, Statistical Methods of Analysis and Chemometrics.
Prof. Karayannis translated together with Prof. C.Efstathiou in the Greek language the textbooks: 1) PRINCIPLES OF INSTRUMENTAL ANALYSIS by D.A. SKOOG, F.J.Holler and S. R. Crouch (5th and 6th Editions) and 2) FUNDAMENTALS IN ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY by D. A. SKOOG, D. M. West, F. J.Holler and S. R. Crouch (8th Edition) .
