6. Brief Review of Intended work:

6.1) Need for the study:

Rasaushadhis play an important and vital role in curing the ailments of human beings. They are well known for their minute dose, fast absorption and quick action.

Manikya (Ruby) is described as “1st Maha Ratna” in the classical texts of Rasashastra like RasaTarangini1. It is having the relation with Surya Grah(SUN). Ratna dharna or wearing of Gems has been in vogue from Vedic times for suppressing the Evil effects of Grahs and ornaments too. Rasashastra has also considered the internal administration of bhasmas prepared from the Precious Stones or Gems. Specific utility of these bhasmas has been given in the Classical Texts of Rasashastra2. Though this practice is prevalent, it could not be popularized due to the cost and the unavailability of raw material for making of bhasmas.

Since the prevalence of seminal insufficiency is growing day by day in men, which is leading to hazardous problem like infertility3. Infertility is criticized4 in the world. Manikya bhasma has been famous for alleviating Dhwajabhanga5 (erectile dysfunction). Apart from the compound preparation of Manikya Bhasma like Manikya-Mihirodya Rasa etc., on which much scientific study could not be taken up, the effect of Manikya bhasma on erectile dysfunction as an individual drug is done by Naresh P. et al at N.R.S. Government Ayurvedic College, Vijayawada in 2009. In this study apart from that an enormous development in the seminal picture like improvement in mortality, improvement in Spermatozoa count, mitigation of morbidity and abnormality was observed. Hence it is decided to take up the study individually to prepare good quality of Manikya bhasma and to see its spermatogenic effect in order to help curing Male Infertility.

6.2) Review of Literature:

Description regarding the types, Grahya Lakshanas, Shodhana, Marana, Dose, therapeutic properties & application can be observed in the Ayurvedic classical texts like RasaRatna Samuchchaya, Ras-Tarangini6, Ras Jal-Nidhi, Rasa Prakashsudhakar7 etc.

Various references regarding Manikya Bhasma and Infertility are available in different Ayurvedic classical texts.

For the present study the references of RasaTarangini are taken for Shodhana8, Marana9,10 to get the good quality of Bhasma.
