Course Essential Questions

Unit 1: What influences how you act?

Unit 2: How do families affect us?

Unit 3: Do we find or create our true selves?

Unit 4: How much should people help each other?

Unit 5: Do people get what they deserve?

Unit 6: What rights and responsibilities should teens have?

Unit 7: What do you do to make an impression?

Course Description

This course will consist of relevant topics and literature that appeal to high school students. Explicit instruction in vocabulary, reading strategies, comprehension, literary analysis, writing, grammar, and language functions will be given.

Course Objectives (Goals)

The successful student will:

  1. Learn strategies for reading
  2. Learn new academic vocabulary words
  3. Learn to read different types of literary genres
  4. Learn to write about literature
  5. Learn the process of writing for different purposes and audiences
  6. Learn different grammar concepts.
  7. Learn speaking skills and group work skills.

Grades will be updated weekly on Aeries.

Late Homework Policy

No late homework will be accepted. Since sometimes unexpected things come up, you will receive 2 “Late HW” passes that you can use per semester.

Assessments

For each of the 7 units, you will have 3 cluster tests, 1 grammar test, and 1 unit exam.

Writing

You will have 7 writing projects this year.

Oral Presentation

You will have 2 large oral presentations as well as many small presentations this year.

Class Participation

In order to learn English concepts and the content for this course, it is mandatory that you participate daily.

Homework

Homework will be given on most days and is always due the next class period unless otherwise stated in class.

Tutoring

LCC offers tutoring in the MediaCenter after school daily. I also offer tutoring by appointment or during lunch in my classroom.
