Orientation to Shriners Children’s Hospital

I am looking forward to meeting all of youat the Shriners Hospital Lobby. I hope everyone is ready for a challenging but rewarding clinical rotation in Pedi. I will do my best to offer you a unique learning opportunity in Pediatrics.

Directions and parking

Please go to click on Map/Directions. Please explore this web site for more information on the ShrinersHospital for Children so you can get an idea if the history and mission of the hospital. Make arrangements to car pool with your classmates or take the commuter rail to North Station and walk over. Pamphlets with the train schedules are available at the hospital.

ID and Immunization

Please bring student ID or license foridentification. You will get a Shriners Hospital IDon your first clinical day.

Wear your uniform the first day. We will talk aboutother options on Tuesday.Always wear your SS ID.

If you did nothave immunization documentation the 1st day of class please obtain it before your first clinical day (I need to see it before you start clinical).

Ifyou do not have a varicella titre or need a varicella vaccinego to Health Services.

HIPAA Medelearn Training program

All students are required to complete the HIPAA Medlearn training program prior to starting a clinical experience at SHC. I will e-mail each of you a user ID. Access the web site @ This will bring you to the student log in page. After typing in your user ID type in the generic password “learn”. You will then be prompted to create your own password. The program requires you to review each slide prior to taking the test. The information on each highlighted box on the right is a good summary of the slide. There are multiple courses that will need to be completed. If you do not pass the test the first time you can retake it after you have reviewed the correct answer. Please print out the completion certificate after each course and have it with you for the 1st clinical day. You will be asked to sign a workforce agreement

Student Schedule 1st day

Following orientation we will go to the 7th floor (Reconstructive unit) where you will getfamiliar with the floor/nurses/patients. You will have a patient for the afternoon.

The expectation is to review their chart and assistwith care of that pt for the afternoon. A clinical worksheet will be passed in the following week.

The following weeks I will e-mail your assignments the night before clinical. Name (initials HIPPA rule), DOB, Diag, Wt. to start your clinical worksheet for that day.

You can come in at 6:30Tuesday morning to look up other information.Review the course objectives- you willgain a great deal of knowledge regarding the pediatric patient and their families in this rotation.

I will pass around our class list/contact info in orientation. We will have a telephone tree in case of a snow day.( Hopefully not). Specific expectations will be discussed in orientation.

Instructions for the Boston Preschool

Some students will be assigned to the Boston Preschool, located at 8 Whittier Place, Boston. ( It is in the bottom floor of the Whittier Place apt building, across and to the left ofthe J.C. Pace grocery store one block from the back entrance of MGH ).

The linktothe school is Visit this site to obtain an overview of the school philosophy and program. The school is open 8a-5p.You should arrive between 8-8:15am. The Director of the Preschool is Judy Langer. Ms. Langer or another teacher will provide the student with information about the preschool and assign the student to an age group.

Follow the written assignment instructions as designated by your clinical instructor since students from different clinical groups may be assigned to this setting.

To access entrance to the Boston Preschool: Look for the fenced-in play ground in the walk-way area across from the J.C.Pace grocery store. Open the gate from the top and ring the bell. Someone will open the door for you.
