MINUTES OF MPN STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
November 20, 2012 MISD

Work Plan FY13 – In the Sept meeting, the members were given a draft of the work plan for FY13, and asked to look it over. If there were any changes they were to email Dawn before the November meeting. Dawn adjusted the work plan to delete any mention of using CADCA primers because this was completed in FY12. She included “moving the community to change on a population level” in Goal #1, Strategy B. There were no other changes, and Charlene McGunn made a motion to approve the work plan. Owen Pfaendtner seconded the motion, and it was approved.
Memorandum of Approval (MOU) –Dawn handed out the MOU for participants to look at, and make any changes. A few changes were suggested, and the MOU will be changed and sent to the members. The MOU should be signed and handed into Dawn on or before the March Steering Committee Meeting. / Dawn – will make suggested changes to MOU, and email to members.

Mobilizing Michigan – Protecting Kids from Marijuana
a. Title - Members were sent an email listing 4-5 names that were suggested for the Marijuana Campaign. The name will be “Mobilizing Michigan – Protecting Kids from Marijuana”.
b.Directions/guidelines for three sessions –Session one (creating awareness campaign) have talking points ready; Session two (consequences) have fact ready and curriculum power point ready; session three (Highly visible media messaged) have op-ed piece ready. Groups were encouraged to meet before their assigned session to firm up their presentations.

Session one group includes Charlene McGunn, Dawn Radzioch, and Nancy Jenuwine; Session 2 groups includes: Jynil Schneider, Mark Kilgore, Owen Pfaendtner, and possibly Sgt. Misch. Session 3 group includes: Lynda Zott, Dana Gire, and Eric Jackson. Other steering members are encouraged to assist by contacting any of the teams.
d. Toolkit–Dawn put together some ideas that could be included in the toolkit. A great deal of discussion took place about what should be included in the toolkit, the cost to design (where can we find funding and limit the number of pieces to reduce cost) and print information, and who should receive them (there are 233 Michigan coalitions).
e. Sample Op-Ed & Tips – Dawn provided participants with copies of Sample Op Ed examples but session three will use the tips and create Michigan specific articles.
f. Sample Talking Points -Charlene suggested creating a one page fact sheet that people can use. Dawn will email out what she has and participants are to provide feedback.
g. Next Steps – A flyer needs to be designed and sent out to coalitions regarding the Marijuana Campaign. It should include what topics will be presented at the next three full MPN meetings; ask for a commitment from each coalition chair and 2 of their members to attend all three meetings, and information about the toolkit the coalitions will receive. / Nancy Buyle and Charlene McGunn will discuss getting the MISD print shop to provide a quote for designing/printing.
Dawn will email out what she has to create a one page fact sheet. All members will look this over and provide feedback.
Dawn will contact Prevention Coordinator about number of coalition that might be interested in these toolkits and where funding might come from.
Session 3 will create sample articles specific to Michigan.
Dawn will create an email message urging coalitions to save the dates and put together a team.
Nancy will design an MPN Flyer about Marijuana Campaign.
Other
- Mark Kilgore noted that St. Clair Shores now has a permanent disposal box for prescription drugs.
- Dawn received an email from Sgt. Lori Misch that said she has been reassigned, and will no longer be involved in MPN. She indicated that her position in the Youth Division will not be replaced but she will let us know who our contact at the sheriff office will be. Charlene suggested John Ange from the Prosecutor Office be invited to our group.
