SB16-24Resolution on the Establishment of a new student memorial garden AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

WHEREAS, The Student Memorial Garden Task Force has been working on the creation of a new Student Memorial Garden since 2004; AND,

WHEREAS, The current Student Memorial Garden between Newcomb Hall, Clemons Library, and the Special Collections Library is underused and insufficient to its purpose; AND,

WHEREAS, The proposed new Student Memorial Garden will serve as a physical space devoted to the lives lost of friends, family members, and peers here at the University of Virginia; AND,

WHEREAS, over 200 people have contributed to a survey on the creation of a new Student Memorial Garden; AND,

WHEREAS, 95% of respondents agreed that the new Student Memorial Garden would fill an existing need of the student body, and that the project would be worth the time and money required to complete it; AND,

WHEREAS, the Student Council Presidential Senate, consisting of 125 student leaders throughout the University of Virginia, have voted the creation of a new Student Memorial Garden as their top issue until the next Student Council Presidential Senate meeting; AND,

WHEREAS, the estimated cost of the creation of the creation of a new Student Memorial Garden is roughly $500,000 to $750,000; AND,

WHEREAS, the Office of the Architect has shown their support of the creation of a new Student Memorial Garden; AND,

WHEREAS, the Student Memorial Garden Task Force has met with Facilities Management to discuss funding options; AND,

WHEREAS, The Student Memorial Garden Task Force will meet with the Office of Dean of Students to discuss funding options; AND,

WHEREAS, The Student Memorial Garden Task Force will meet with Alumni Hall to discuss funding options; THERFORE BE IT,

RESOLVED, the Student Council of the University of Virginia fully supports the creation of a new Student Memorial Garden in conjunction with the support of the Student Council Presidential Senate comprising of 125 student leaders; AND BE IT FURTHER,

RESOLVED, The Student Memorial Garden Task Force will continue to actively seek funding options; AND BE IT FURTHER,

RESOLVED, The Student Memorial Garden Task Force will continue their acquisition of all necessary and available poll and survey data in the creation and support of the new Student Memorial Garden.
