UNIT: The History of Fashion and Design


Annotation:

This unit includes an article on the history of fashion and design and a study guide. An optional exam is included.

This unit is designed for use by substitute teachers in CTAE classrooms. It is a self-contained activity that requires minimal technical understanding by the substitute teacher.

Students with Disabilities:

For students with disabilities, the instructor should refer to the student's IEP to be sure that the accommodations specified are being provided. Instructors should also familiarize themselves with the provisions of Behavior Intervention Plans that may be part of a student's IEP. Frequent consultation with a student's special education instructor will be beneficial in providing appropriate differentiation.

a)Describe the influence of historical figures and events on fashion.

b)Describe the influence that economic, social, political, demographic, geographic, and psychological factors have had and currently have on fashion.

FCS-FPE-9Students will analyze factors (social, psychological, economic, cultural) affecting textile and apparel decisions for individuals and families and how those decisions impact society.

FCS-CS-10Students will investigate the history of the consumer movement.

Fashion designs and trends are always evolving. Fashion has a significant impact on the American culture and the economy as well as world culture and the world economy.

LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF FASHION AND DESIGN

1.Identify the standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom.

MKT-FM-2 Students will explore the history of fashion.

a)Describe the influence of historical figures and events on fashion.

b)Describe the influence that economic, social, political, demographic, geographic, and psychological factors have had and currently have on fashion.

2.Review Essential Question(s). Post Essential Questions in the classroom.

•Why do we have fashion?

•Why is fashion important?

•Who sets the fashion trends?

•How often does fashion change?

•Why is it important to clothing dealers that fashions change?

•How did fashion trends change throughout the 21st century?

•How was the fashion industry impacted by America’s involvement in WWII?

3.Provide each student with theStudent Information Sheet: TheHistory of Fashion and Design along with the corresponding study guide. (They may work alone or in groups, at the teacher’s discretion.)

4. Ask the students to complete the study guide.

5. Collect the completed study guides.

6. Use the answer key provided to review each question with the class.

7. Ask students at random to name one thing they learned about the history of fashion and design.

•Have one student write the important information on the board.

•Have students copy notes from the board into their notebooks.

8.Provide each student with the Fashion History Exam. This will test students on their fashion history knowledge.
