Daisy Meeting – Oct. 13. 2015

Edie Barfield welcomed everyone.
The minutes from the Sept. 8, 2015 meeting were approved..
Lindsay Goolsby & Jenelle Wass presented the Junior Master Gardener Curriculum that they would be using with the 4th grade at B. F. Grady Elementary. Curriculum was approved by the DAISY Committee.
Kim Machamer, OBCM Program Supervisor, Duplin County Health Department
presented a brochure and a flyer regarding the OB Care Management Program that follows high risk pregnancies in Duplin County. Mrs. Machamer explained that this program works with the school system assisting students with teenage pregnancy. Mrs. Machamer left flyers and contact information for any students who may need this service.
Lisa Jones, DCS PE teacher
Mrs. Jones presented a brochure for students that listed different health care agencies. Mrs. Jones explained that this list would be available for students from 8th grade through 12th grade. Mrs. Jones asked for suggestions and for agencies that would need to be in the brochure. Any suggestions can be submitted to Dawn Smith to be forwarded to Mrs. Jones.
Dr. Ben Thigen, DCS Support Services & Federal Policy
Dr. Thigpen gave an overview of the article Education is the best medicine. He explained that the DAISY Committee is the bridge between health care and the school system.
Action Plan- the committee completed a group activity to help establish the priorities for the 2015-16 school year. The activity went very well and we will bring the results back to the committee at the December 8, 2015 meeting.
Vidant Health’s Learn Healthy America Pilot - Vidant Health will be working with NC Prevention Partners and 3 school districts within its area to pilot the Learn Healthy America Program that addresses obesity prevention. Duplin County schools is one of three districts chosen to be a part of this pilot. Approval was given from the DAISY Committee for Duplin County Schools to partner with Vidant Health and NC Prevention Partners.
Bonnie Johnson shared that the Eastern Baptist Assoc. is currently seeking volunteers to help with the food distribution program. Mrs. Johnson asked if it would be possible for seniors from Duplin County Schools to volunteer with this program and who could she contact to assist her. She was referred to Mrs. Deborah Sholar and Kim Mathis for assistance and Danna Westerbeek agreed to facilitate getting information out to the high school guidance counselors .
Bonnie Johnson, Duplin County Health Department
Another dental sealant project is set for the last week of October at North Duplin Elementary School. Ms. Johnson is working with the school nurse to coordinate these efforts and the program will target 3rd grade students.
Beth Lanier, DCS Lead Social Worker
Building Peace in the School's first session went very well and Diane will gladly do a group anywhere with participation of 6 to 7 students. BES has had 6 students participate in their program and WMS has had great success with this program also. This program is funded through JCPC.
Sue Ellen Cottle, DCS Lean School Nurse
Duplin County Nursing staff are currently doing vision screening for 2nd & 4th grade and hearing screening for Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd & 6th grades.
Flu Shots for Duplin County School Staff have been completed.
The nursing staff are currently scheduling field trips for 5th & 6th grades to attend Poe Center in Raleigh. This field trip will provide curriculum for nutrition, puberty and hygiene and is being funded through our Abstinence Grant.
Jeff Thigpen, DSC Transportation
Mr. Thigpen shared the new policy for bus riders. Mr. Thigpen stated that the drivers will be required to use hand signals to inform students as to when to cross the street to get on the bus. This policy will be effective January 2016 and Mr. Thigpen reported that Duplin County Schools began enforcing the new policy the 1st day of school of the 2015-16 school year. They are currently teaching Pre-K through 2nd grade the hand signals. All Bus Drivers are responsible for teaching the students that ride the bus the new signals.

Health Dept. physicals are still being done. Pre-K are only good for a year, therefore they will continue those throughout the year.
Meeting was adjourned with the announcement of the next meeting on December 8, 2015 and the January 12, 2016 meeting is cancelled.
