INTRODUCTION
One of the most important tectonic events on the Arabian plate is the closure of the Neo-TethysOcean along the north and northeast boundaries of Arabia , that began about Middle to Late Cretaceous. The Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere was gradually consumed beneath Eurasia , while microplates were sutured to the Eurasian plate as the closure continued. Final continent-continent collision between Arabia and Eurasia led to the development of the Zagros Mountain Belt and the Eastern Anatolian Plateau. Furthermore, opening of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in the Miocene-Pliocene times has set the initial stages of an Arabian plate separation from “mother” Africa plate. Continued motion of Arabia towards the north and northeast resulted in further separation of Arabia from Africa along the Dead Sea Fault System in the Pliocene times. Important to note, the closure of the Neo-Tethys is responsible for the emplacement of many ophiolite bodies, that currently lie along sides of the Eurasia-Arabia plate boundary.
Seismic activity recorded by networks within the Arabian plate and outside shows high concentration of earthquakes along Arabian plate boundaries, examples include the Zagros Mountain Belt and The Dead Sea Fault System. This pattern is strongly evident by recent and historic devastating earthquakes that claimed the lives of many hundreds to thousands of people, examples of those still resonate in our minds, such as the Dhamar Earthquake in Yemen, 1980, Aqaba Earthquake, 1985 and Bam Earthquake in Iran, 2003,.
Earthquakes do not recognize geo graphic or political borders, their damaging effects are regional, a perfect example is the earthquake generated tsunami that swept the Indian Ocean from Sumatra to India, to Somalia, to Oman where 2-4 meters run-up were measured in the Salalah coastal areas. Cooperation between countries is crucial in earthquake studies to asses their hazard and mitigate their possible effects. Hence, the cooperation leads to production of large scale seismic intensity and hazard maps and eventually arrives at a workable Seismic Code for the region and its surrounding, which is vital to future development.
This Forum is a venue for presenting ideas and recent research work on seismology, seismic hazards, and seismic engineering in and around the Arabian Peninsula . The forum is to cover discussions on earthquake related topics, and will provides a platform for the planning of region-wide collaborative seismological studies and exchange of seismic data between centers in the region.
Conference Topics
- Seismology and active tectonics
- Seismic networks: data processing, and analysis
- Seismic hazard, risk and mitigation
- Structural and earthquake engineering

THE SEMAIL OPHIOLITES FIELD TRIP
Lead by Professor Hugh Rollinson
The Semail ophiolite in Oman exemplifies one of the most complete and intact oceanic lithosphere in the world. The Semail ophiolite sequences are well exposed and can easily be accessed. The field trip is intended to walk through the different sequences of Semail ophiolite, see and touch rocks that lie in the upper mantle, base of the oceanic crust (Moho), sheeted dike complex, and reach the very top of the sequence where the pillow lava lie.
(see the attach file on the field trip)
