Homework:

The word wall words (reading words) for this week are: after, before, buy, school, done, off

*Please practice them nightly. Students should be able to read them by Friday.

*Please remember to continue to review past word wall words also.

*Please complete 3 or more word wall activities by Friday.

The spelling patternfor the week is listed on the colored sheet. When studying the spelling pattern with your child, please focus on the sound we are working on or the rule, rather than just memorization. Your child will be tested on some of those words as well as similar words .

Thursday, 5/14:Please read A New Friend or the leveled book once to yourself and then to someone at home. Please answer the questions using complete sentences.

Notes and Reminders:

  • Scholastic Book Orders(optional) are due on May 27th. This will be the last book order for the year.
  • Continue to practice math facts (ipad, computer, flash cards). (5 minutes a night would be helpful)
  • May 20, Spring Chorus Concert at the New ProvidenceHigh School. Your child should arrive at the high school by 6:40pm.They should look for me in the auditorium. An email was sent home last week regarding dress code. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Overview of the Week:

In Language Arts, we will read The New Friend. This week the students will work on comprehension skills with an emphasis on story structure. Students will identify the parts of the story (characters, setting, etc) and complete a story map. Students will also review past skills that we learned this year including drawing conclusions, making predictions, cause and effect, and comparing and contrasting. In terms of phonics, we will also learn how to read and write words with the prefixes un- and re-.

For our grammar point for the week, students will practice using was and werecorrectly in sentences as well as adding describing words.

In Writer’s Workshop, we will begin our animal all about books.

In Math,we will work on Chapter 10:Represent Data. This week we will read and make picture graphs, read and make bar graphs as well as read and make tally charts. This is a short chapter and the students will be assessed next week.

In social studies, we will continue our study of Communities and the world we live in.

In science, we will continue to observe our Brassica plants and discuss the parts of a plant, what they need to grow, and how seeds spread to create new plants. We will also be planting our grass seeds.
