Mouth Cancer Foundation Consultant, Nicki Rowland, is announced as the key note speaker at two of the Health Days at Hull College Group’s Fresher’s events on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 26th September.
Thousands of students from all Hull College campuses including Queens Gardens, Park Street, Cannon Street and the KC Stadium will hear Nicki talk about the charity’s latest life saving initiative, the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme. Nicki who is also Practice Manager at Perfect 32 in Beverley, East Yorkshirehas been instrumental in helping the charity set up the initiative which calls for every dental practice in the UKto be carrying out a thorough head and neck examination as part of regular check-ups. The scheme is a ‘Two minutes to save a life’ screening protocol, which is a 10-point checklist that every dentist should be able to include in their routine examinations in order to increase early detection rates and save lives.

Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme Consultant, Nicki, says “Awareness is integral to achieving early detection of head and neck cancers, thus saving lives. The Mouth Cancer Foundation will accredit dental practices that meet certain criteria and routinely participate in oral cancer screening. Full membership includes access to a dedicated section of the charity website and FREE 1 hour CPD element as well as a wealth of professional development and training modules suitable for all members of the practice team to ensure regular screening benefits practice patients.”

The Mouth Cancer Foundation is a registered charity no. 1109298.
In the UK, nearly 8000 people are diagnosed with Mouth Cancer every year. Cancers can occur in any part of the mouth, tongue, lips, and adjacent areas like the throat, salivary glands, pharynx, larynx, sinus, and other sites in the head and neck area. In its very early stages, these Mouth Cancers can be easy to ignore.
Symptoms include:
1. An ulcer or white or red patch anywhere in the mouth that does not heal within 3 weeks
2. A lump or swelling anywhere in the mouth, jaw or neck that persists for more than 3 weeks
3. A difficulty in swallowing, chewing or moving the jaw or tongue
5. A numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth
6. A feeling that something is caught in the throat
7. A chronic sore throat or hoarseness that persists more than 6 weeks
8. An unexplained loosening of teeth with no dental cause

The Hull College Group –

Nicki Rowland –
Nicki qualified as a state registered, chartered physiotherapist in 1992 and had a special interest in treating patients with spinal and head and neck problems. In 2006, Nicki and her husband dentist set up Perfect 32 Dental Practice in Beverley, East Yorkshire.
Nicki developed and trained her dental practice team to deliver the best practice standards for anoral cancer screening and referral servicein general dental practice. This and the running of community awareness events have won Perfect 32 many awards.Nicki and Perfect 32 have received television coverage for the practice's workNicki herself was crowned Practice Manager of the Year by ADAM in 2012.
Nicki was invited to be a consultant for the Mouth Cancer Foundation in 2012 to help launch the Mouth Cancer ScreeningAccreditationScheme developed by Dr Vinod Joshi. She now speaks to both the profession and the general public about oral cancer management in dental practice, the importance of a whole team approach and raising awareness.
