Introduction
Competition for university courses and finding suitable employment is getting tougher every year. It is vital that you start preparing yourself for the next stage of your career. NEW College Careers Department has arranged for approximately 60 visiting speakers to help inform and advise our students on a range of careers and university courses. Talks will take place at 9.30. 10.45. and 12.00. Students must attend at least two talks. When selecting your talks, make your own decision and don’t select just because a friend is attending. Make your selection of talks carefully in consultation with your tutor. Please note a register will be taken at each talk.
Access to Leeds –Leeds University Rebecca Sykes Room B8/9 10.45
Leeds University is one of the most popular universities in our local area and approximately 40% of our students are eligible for a reduced offer. Rebecca will tell you all about the programme: how to apply, how it will benefit you and the criteria that you have to fulfil.
Accountancy- KPMG Accountants Rob Marshall Room G15 12.00
KPMG is a global network of professional firms providing Audit, Tax and Advisory services. They employ 145,000 professionals working in 153 countries. They recruit annually for their School and College Leaver Programme. KPMG will outline opportunities within their company and the skills and qualities they are looking for from students.
Accountancy – Huddersfield University Room G15 Keith Best 10.45
Understanding how organisations are financed and effectively managed is at the core of Accountancy degrees. Accountants are needed throughout the private, public and voluntary sectors, so whatever the economic climate, great job opportunities are within the grasp of well qualified graduates.

Sally is a Careers Adviser at Connexions with over 25 years’ experience of helping young people to find suitable employment. She is going to pass on her expertise in what employers would look for during the application process.

Armed Forces

What are the careers on offer in the Navy – are they all at sea? Find out about entry for ratings and officers and the vast range of different roles there are in the Navy.

Sgt Faddy will be discussing the different levels of entry to the RAF and getting sponsorship through a degree.

YSJ have strong links to dance activity and development in the local community through partnerships with local practitioners in the arts, education and health, and links with the wider professional industry, supported by a team of staff that are all dance artists and academics.

The skills you pick up from a History degree are transferable to many different job areas. Charles will talk through the things to consider when looking at the different kinds of degrees available.
IT Careers – Jeremy Robinson, EX- NEW College Room A6 9.30
Jeremy has worked in the Computing Industry for over 20 years working for different employers such as GE (General Electric), Minorplanet Vehicle Tracking, The Media Buzz and various other Internet start-up companies. He will talk about the range of different careers in the Computing/IT industry and the skills required. He will also give advice on trying to find your first position in the Computing/IT industry and the importance of keeping your skills up to date.

Joint degrees give you the opportunity to carry on studying more than one subject at degree level. There can be a preconceived idea that these degrees aren’t as ‘weighty’ as a single honours degree, Penny will talk through why she believes this idea is wrong and how, in her experience employers see the benefit of having skills that spread across more than one area.

Adam is an ex student of NEW College. After graduating from university and law school Adam worked at Hartley and Worstenholme Solicitors locally subsequently becoming a Partner where he headed up the estate agency and lettings division and co-ordinated the IT systems. He now works as Managing Partner with Ridley & Hall LLP Solicitors in Huddersfield specialising in residential conveyancing. As well as talking about his career Adam will give you an insight into the day to day work of a Solicitor and the different legal specialisms available. He will give a personal view of the skills and qualities required and the realities of forging a career in the competitive field of law.

Gordons LLP is one of the largest law firms in Yorkshire, providing personal and commercial legal services and aid to a wide range of businesses and clients. They operate an apprenticeship programme for Trainee Legal Executives and have recruited 4 NEW College students in the last couple of years. This session will be led by ex-NEW College students giving an overview of this programme.
