Before completing the application below, please read the program brochure that can be downloaded at the bottom of this page of the Center for Urban and Global Studies website here. The cost for the program including two course credits and all the travel and lodging expenses with the international airfare is $6,500. Scholarships from multiple sources are available to students who are qualified based on need and merit (see p. 3 below).

Please include your interests, activities, and career objectives; why you are choosing to study abroad; what experience or knowledge you have of your host country; and whether you have studied or traveled abroad before.

College transcript(s): You may submit an unofficial transcript. It must show credits and grades for all courses taken to date.

Recommendation letter: This letter should only be completed by a college professor who is familiar with your performance in the classroom. If you are eligible for and also apply for a scholarship, the letter should also address this issue (see p. 3).

A Scholarship Essay for

River Cities in Southern China:

Sustainable Urban Development in the Pearl River Delta

1.  Watch a short Youtube video on the Chinese megacity of Shenzhen using this link and watch another short Youtube video on Hong Kong here. In two pages, using your imagination and knowledge to compare and contrast the role river cities play in China’s rapid and massive urbanization.

2.  In one-to-two paragraphs at the end of your essay, please also address any issues of financial need and indicate whether or not you receive financial aid during the academic year.

3.  This essay is to be submitted IN ADDITION to the essay requested for the general application.

Please note that scholarships are limited in availability and will be based upon need and merit, as determined by applicants financial status, academic records, references, statement of purpose and essay response and other information included in this application and the program application.

Ø  The Program and Scholarship Application materials must be submitted to the Center for Urban and Global Studies (CUGS) by March 16, 2016. Please include name and Trinity ID # on all scholarship application response materials.

Ø  Applications will be reviewed as a group by the Scholarship Committee. Acceptance letters will be issued within two weeks of the COMPLETED application review. Your scholarship application is considered a separate part of your program application materials. Please ensure that it is delivered in a timely manner.

q  A copy of your letter of recommendation will be used in the scholarship application. Please make sure that this letter is with your completed program application. Please ensure that your recommendation letter is received by CUGS when you submit your scholarship application.

Ø  Students already receiving financial aid for the academic year must include a copy of their Financial Aid Status from the FAStatus.trincoll.edu portal. You can print this off to include with this packet and deliver all materials to Rashana Lord at CUGS. If you have never logged on to this site, contact the Financial Aid office for instruction.

Ø  Students who are not receiving financial aid for the academic year, but wish the scholarship committee to evaluate their application on the basis of financial need in addition to merit, are asked to provide a copy of their parents’ most recent (2013 or 2014) tax return.
