Annual Seminar - Brownfield Remediation

This seminar will be of interest to all professionals including Developers, Engineers, Planners and Scientists who are involved with the redevelopment of brownfield sites. Expert speakers from the EPA, Local Authority, Consulting Engineers and Contractorswill address the key topics of interest from the initial site assessment process through to implementation of the optimal remediation plan.

Seamus Coghlan and Gerry Walsh – Cork City Council
One of the largest brownfield sites in the Region, with a history of industrial use, what challenges face the developers.
09.30 - 10.15 / Dealing with the legacy of illegal and unregulated waste disposal sites in Ireland
Darragh Musgrave, Regional Director White Young Green
The presentation will include an overview of the EPA code of practice and existing legal frame work, summarise typical site investigation techniques with a view to developing a robust Conceptual Site Model (CSM) and identify some of the available remediation options.

Topics that will be discussed include the principles of human health risk assessment and the problems faced in developing numerical assessment methods including the limitations of Generic Assessment Criteria and detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment (using Dutch and UK examples). The importance of the conceptual model and the role that risk assessment can have in providing an input to the design of a remedial solution.

Topics that will be discussed include slurry cut off walls, permeable reactive barriers and soil mixing with particular reference to case studies such as the Aldi site in Waterford.
