Deputy Head Post
Job Description
The following can be developed taking into account the successful candidate’s strengths, interests and career development needs and the requirements of the school as a whole.
In addition to carrying out the professional duties of a teacher as set out in the ‘teachers pay and conditions document’ it is expected that the post-holder will be required to take on the following duties:
- General Requirements and Functions
1.1The Deputy Head of School shall carry out in accordance with Part X of the statutory Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and the professional duties of a teacher, including those duties particularly assigned by the Head of School in accordance with Part XII of the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.
1.2Assist the Head of School in managing the school or such part of it as may be determined by the Head of School.
1.3Undertake any professional duty of the Head of School which may be delegated by the Head of School, in accordance with Part IX of the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.
1.4Undertake, in the absence of the Head of School and to the extent required by the Head of School or the relevant body or, in the case of an aided school, the Governing Body, the professional duties of the Head of School.
1.5To provide support and appraisal to co-ordinators, according to line management responsibilities.
1.6To deputise for the Head of School, when necessary
1.7Along with the Head of School and Senior Leadership Team, promote the school within the community.
1.8To have joint responsibility for school development planning.
1.9To represent the school at meetings within the Local Authority and outside if necessary.
- Main Professional Duties
Continuing Professional Development
2.1To oversee the Continuing Professional Development Programme including oversight of the budget.
2.2To oversee the school’s induction arrangements for newly qualified teachers, supply teachers and others new to the school.
2.3To organise staff consultative meetings and school-based INSET in conjunction with the Head of School.
2.4To participate in the school’s policy of Performance Reviews for the purpose of informing personal professional development.
Curriculum
3.1To oversee the planning and allocation of resources designed to facilitate the curriculum, including advising the Head of School on current / anticipated needs for staff and other resources.
3.2The compilation of the school timetable and planning of teaching groups at all levels, including the deployment of staff, rooms and other resources.
3.3To co-ordinate the curriculum:
3.3.1giving guidance and support to Departments in implementing schemes of work related to the national curriculum and ensure that statutory and school policies are being met.
3.3.2 to provide leadership in curriculum matters and support the Curriculum Co-ordinator in their duties, including the 6th Form Provision.
3.3.3 to monitor and evaluate the curriculum alongside the Subject Co-ordinators.
3.3.4 to support the Head of School in managing and monitoring the assessment of pupils across the school. Helping the Head of School to report to Government and Local Authority on performance and target setting.
3.3.5To be the examinations officer for the school.
Management
4.1To be a member of the Senior Executive and Senior Leadership teams and other staff teams as appropriate and to contribute to the development of policy and planning for the school.
4.2To assist the Head of School as required and to deputise for them when necessary.
4.3To deputise as necessary for other members of the Senior Leadership team.
4.4To be responsible for the professional and personal support of staff.
4.5To be responsible for the support staff team in school.
4.6To be support, where necessary, other schools in their management of pupils with special educational needs, giving professional advice and using the resources of the school to prevent a transfer to a special school.
4.7To contribute as a member of the Senior Leadership Team to the overall organisation and operation of the school, to promote its policies and aims and strive for excellence in meeting the educational needs of its pupils.
4.8To assist the Head of School in monitoring the quality of teaching and learning throughout the school.
4.9To be a key member of the school’s pastoral system, supporting staff, pupils and parents when necessary.
4.10To be responsible for the organisation of daily timetables and supply cover arrangements.
4.11To be responsible for the annual audit of pupil need for funding.
4.12To be the schools designated safeguarding lead under the direction of the Head of School.
Governors and Parents
5.1To attend meetings as appropriate with the Governing Body and parents and to provide such reports and information as required.
5.2To attend, as required, the meetings supporting the work and development of the Parents and Friends Association.
Working Time / Review
This job description sets out the main expectations of the school in relation to the postholder’s professional responsibilities and duties, but does not direct the particular amount of time to be sent carrying them out. There are no definitive working time arrangements in the national conditions of employment. The job description will be reviewed at least once per year and may be subject to amendment or modification at any time after consultation with the postholder.
