Approximate Directions to the Warthen Cemetery:

from Nancy Amos

From SR 39 bypass at Martinsville, go south 5.8 miles on SR 67 to

Friendship Road. Turn right and go .7 miles to Graveyard Road. Turn right

and go 2 miles to Church Road. Turn right a short distance and right again,

and go 1.7 miles to Gray Road. Turn right and go .1 mile. Cemetery is 100

yards back on left side of road.

Directions # 2 from Pete Ross:

The Warthen Cemetery was located near the intersection of Olive Church and

Warthen Roads. It was east of Olive Church and north of Warthen. I

searched for it last April and could not find it. I remember seeing it

several times in my youth. It was in a cultivated field and had an iron

fence around it. As I remember it had maybe 6 or 8 graves in it. I did not

stop to inquire about it at the farm house located nearby when I was there

last year. The latest Morgan county map does show the correct location:

Further location from Pete Ross

Warthen Road is north of Paragon about 3 to 4 miles. I got there by taking

Graveyard Road out of Paragon to Strawberry Lane, then quickly to the right

on Olive Church Road, up a steep hill (Mannon Hill, according to the map).

>From there it will be about 2 miles to Warthen Road, which turns to the

right or east only. Go east on Warthen road and look for the first house

(old farm house and buildings) on your left or north. Probably not more

than 1/4 mile from Olive Church Road. The cemetery is located between that

house and Olive Church Road, on the north side of Warthen Road. If you come

to a small bridge, you've gone too far. As I recall, the cemetery should

be about 50 to 100 yards off Warthen Road.

Sarah was born in TN so I assume it was there. However there was a part of TN that was NC at a time and this could account for the differences.

WILLIAM BURKHART, farmer and stock-raiser, was born October 1,

1845, in Morgan County, Ind., and is the fourth of the ten children born to

Ambrose and Ann (Bragg) Burkhart, the former a native of Indiana, the

latter of Tennessee. William grew to manhood on a farm, receiving the

rudiments of a common school education. His father was reared in Mon-

roe County. William enlisted, on August 25, 1861, in Company H,

Thirty-third Indiana Infantry, remaining in the service until the close of the

war. At the engagement of Thompson's Station, he was taken prisoner,

and confined in Libby Prison twelve days, then paroled. At the battle of

Resaca, he was struck five times with bullets. He was in almost a con-

tinous fight from Resaca to Peach Tree Creek, and was with Sherman's

famous "march to the sea." He was discharged at Indianapolis, Ind., on

August 5, 1865, holding the rank of Sergeant. He was married, Novem-

ber 18, 1868, to Mary A. Ratts (deceased), who left him two children,

viz., William H., born September 9, 1869; Mary A. (deceased), born

August 13, 1873. He was next married to Sarah J. Shuler, on September

27, 1874. Two children have been born to them--Norman E., born Sept-

ember 6, 1876; Robert O., born September 13, 1878. Mrs. Burkhart is

the daughter of Charlton and Phebe (Warthen) Shuler, natives of Virginia

and Indiana, and of German and Irish extraction respectively. Mr. Burkhart

and wife are consistent members of the Christian Church. He owns 140

acres of land, very fairly improved. In politics, he is a wide-awake Repub-

lican.
