Learning Stations Rapunzel

Symbolism- (You should have placed a star by them in your story. Not the picture! Think about an objects in the story that could have deeper meaning.)

In fairy tales, places and objects, as well as characters, can be symbols. What might the desert symbolize to Rapunzel. Explain your thinking.

Point of View – (Highlighted pink)

Rapunzel is written in third person point of view. Imagine if the story were told from first person point of view with the witch was the narrator. What advantages and disadvantages would this have for your understanding of the story? Use at least two pieces of textual evidence to support your answer.

Character Development – (Highlighted yellow)

a.  What are three of the woman’s character traits in Rapunzel? Use two pieces of textual evidence for each character trait (total of six pieces of evidence) to support your answer.

b.  Fairy tales are filled with antagonists. Name three other antagonists who are similar to the witch, and explain what they have in common.

Conflict – (Highlighted green)

Who do you think was the number one cause of Rapunzel’s conflict – her mother, father, or the witch? Use textual evidence to support your answer.

Plot – (Highlighted blue)

The plot triangle has several components: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Each group member will select a component of the plot triangle and be responsible for drawing that component on the board with details from the story.

Theme – (Written at the end of the story. Think abstract noun!)

Authors use themes to try to teach us about life so that we can take lessons from stories and apply them to our own lives.

a. What do you think is the theme of Rapunzel? Why do you think this?

b. Choose a character and tell about a time when you could relate to this character. Why do you believe the character acted this way? How do their actions help shape the theme?
