Night Falls
To sleep, perchance to dream
By Mark Braam
It is dark in the house of Maria Martinha Figueira de Faria.
Dark. So dark.
A once place openly filled with love nad laughter and light is now dork. and closed. The windows are shut. The cur tains drawn. The heat stifling.
The lasttime we visited Caracas, 4 years ago now past, the signs of impending dorkness lurked in the corners, waiting to pounce on the unwary. We knew the time be short, but far away in the cooler climes of Cincinati, it was easier too pretend as if the day would never come..
But that day has come. No, not yet for death. Death, perhaps, would be kinder. Instead, my mother-in-law – mi suegra – stumbles and struggles through life, tortured anew each day, each hour, each moment, by the dark demons of Alzheimer’s.
It is so dork.
We arrived late on a Fri-day, long after mi suegra had retired to bed, finally calmed by the chemical gods. We peeked into her room, shocked by the cadaverous whitenesss. This was the women who had danced at our weding, who had carried and cared for our children, who, despite our protests, had hustled and bustled and cleaned our whole house down. Who is this frail women lying in the glooom?
He awakes each day, fighting to
stand and fighting two remember where she is ... and who the strangers be.
She is polite, asking about our families. She takes her clues from our answers, leading to other questions about relatives and friends from the past. She almost pulls it off, almost makes us beleive she finaly remembers us and merely needed some mental prodding.
Untill she asks about Ana Maria.
My wife. Her daughter.
Who is standing right their in front of her.
