This is the last EU briefing.

The European Commission has drastically cut back on the amount of legislation it is putting forward and there is nothing much forthcoming of interest to archaeology.

The next Presidency will be held by the Netherlands, January to June 2016.

EU Capitals of Culture 2016 are Donostia/San Sebastian and Wroclaw

EU Green City will be Ljubljana

Interreg Europe

First call closed. A new website has been launched –

It is worth checking this from time to time to see when there are new calls.

North Sea Region

A Call 2 “interwork” event will be held in Amsterdam 9 – 10 December for advice and guidance on submitting an expression of interest for the second call. See details here: It may be difficult to find a possibility for archaeology in this region’s programmes.First call closed. Dates for second call not yet posted.

Baltic Sea Region

The Revised Action Plan has been agreed. Reports of the Berlin Development workshop are on the web site. First call closed.

No news yet of a second call. The web site has a project data base.

North West Europe Region

Nothing new. Second call deadline 30 November. For contact points in each member state go to the Contacts tab on the above website. The following link gives information about the application process and the manual.

The European Commission has launched an EU Strategy for the Alpine Region.

Central Europe Region

The second call will open in April 2016. The main website offers a link for those interested in posting project ideas or partner searches. There will be a launch conference for the EU strategy for the Alpine Region, 25-26 January in Brdo, Slovenia. See here:

Atlantic Area

Priority 4 on environment protection and promotion of cultural identity(enhancing bio-diversity and the natural and cultural assets) will be the one to watch.

The European Commission has finally approved the Atlantic Area Progamme and the first call is expected in the first half of 2016. Check the web site to look for dates.

South East Europe Region

Nothing new. This programme has three separate sections: Adriatic-Ionian, Danube and Balkan-Mediterranean. The Danube Transnational Programme has approved a provision partnersearch platform which can be accessed from this web site.

Priority 2 for the Adriatic-Ionian Region is “to promote the sustainable valorisation and preservation of natural and cultural assets as growth assets in the Adriatic-Ionian region.” Ou can register for email alerts here:

Priority 2.2 for the Danube Region is “to foster sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources.” First call closed. Its website is here:

For the Balkan-Mediterranean region, although there is an environment priority it is hard to see cultural heritage fitting in. There is a provisional website designed to help prepare for the first call, which has not yet officially been announced.

Interreg VB

There is a fourth priority of great interest – Protecting, promoting and developing cultural and natural heritagefor the northern periphery and arctic programme. Suggest contacting the person below for more detail.

I find this web site fairly impenetrable. You need to be registered properly with it for it to work, so it’s up to organizations directly to sort it out.

CULTURE COUNCIL

The Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council meeting was held on November 23 and 24 in Brussels. Here are links to two relevant declarations:

The Luxembourg Presidency pressed for a European Year of Cultural Heritage. No decision has yet been taken on this. Ministers also agreed that digitization of cultural heritage and online accessibility of cultural material and digital preservation are essential to highlight the importance of cultural heritage. In the Netherlands Presidency to come during the first half of 2016, that government plans an EU2016 Creative Challenge Call. Here is the web site, which may be worth watching:
