PurposeThis is a theory based unit standard for people who require background information on the greyhound racing industry, or to inform a decision on career choice within the industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the: national structure that governs greyhound racing within the New Zealand racing industry; the department structure that manages greyhound racing; Greyhound Racing New Zealand Rules of Racing and the New Zealand Greyhound; and roles of official staff on a greyhound raceday.

Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of the national structure that governs greyhound racing within the New Zealand racing industry.

1.1The organisations that govern greyhound racing with the New Zealand racing industry are described in terms of their roles and functions.

Element 2
Demonstrate knowledge of the department structure that manages greyhound racing.
Performance criteria
2.1The department structure that manages the greyhound industry is identified.
Rangeincludes but is not limited to – Chief Executive Officer, Board Secretariat, Racing Manager, Training and Development Officer, Field Officers/Stewards, Racecourse Inspector, Stipendiary Stewards.
Element 3
Demonstrate knowledge of the Greyhound Racing New Zealand Rules of Racing and the New Zealand Greyhound.
Performance criteria
3.1Description of the Greyhound Racing New Zealand Rules of Racing and Regulations identifies their function.
3.2Description of the Greyhound Racing New Zealand Rules of Racing and Regulations identifies sources of advice for their interpretation.

Element 4
Demonstrate knowledge of the roles of official staff on a greyhound raceday.
Performance criteria
4.1Official staff for a greyhound raceday are described in terms of their roles.
RangeRace Club secretary, Raceday Secretary, Racecourse Inspector, Stipendiary Steward, Field Officer/Steward, Assistance Stipendiary Steward, Judge, veterinarian, Swab Attendant, kennel officials, Lure Driver, Starter.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
