Words Their Way 5th Grade Daily Activities
Classwork / HomeworkDay One / Teacher Station:
· Previous sort test
· Learn new sort / Closed Sort Practice:
· Color the back of your cards and cut them out.
· Do a closed sort.
Day Two / Open Sort with Partner:
· Do several open sorts with your partner (at least 3). Be creative!
· Record the sort rules in your notebook. / Part of speech
· Write the part of speech for your word.
Day Three / Word Hunt:
· In your notebook create 3 columns with the following headings: Spelling Word – Antonym - Synonym
· Now find antonyms and synonyms for each word.
· Use a dictionary or thesaurus to help. / Context Clues:
· Write half of your words in a sentence. Check the definition if you need to. For a bonus, try writing a few sentences as dialogue with proper punctuation!
Day Four / True or False?
· Write each of your words along with a statement to describe its meaning. Some should be true and others should be false. Then see how many friends can get it correct. / Context Clues:

Day Five / Game Day/Spelling City:
· Complete a closed sort and glue your words onto your activity page.
· Login to Spelling City and play games to practice your sort. / Final Activities:
· Complete the Apply the Skill page (back side of activity page).
· Study for your test by quizzing yourself in your notebook.
Free Activities (Please complete each activity only once per sort):
· Wordle: Go to wordle.net and create a word cloud using all of your spelling words. Make sure you type up the most difficult words more often so they stand out.
· Picasso: Sketch and label your spelling words.
· Battleship: Grab a sheet for our paper shelf
· Charades: Remember, this is a silent activity!
· Make riddles for your words
· Write a tongue twister for your words using alliteration
· Create a poem using your words.
· Word clues: Write two or three clues relating to each noun and leave a blank after the clues. For example: boots, jacket, hat, ______(answer: gloves)
